no, but he could have paid his way out of it. If he had two years left, he might have been able to pay the €800,000 and go.

Sure, and we can pay him €800,000 to leave. Buying your way out of a contract is a relatively new thing in football.

Anyway, my point was that there's a balance here. In football, a player or manager has extra rights over an accountant or a butcher's apprentice in the form of the guaranteed money, but has given up his freedom of movement for it.
You can't spell failure without FAI

Very magnanimous of Hunt, seeing that Staunton wouldn't play him when it was obvious to everybody that he should be starting.

Or is it a sly dig at those who were playing every game?
This is not the best signature in the world, this is just a tribute

Watch either Cyprus game, the San Marino game, either Slovakia game, the Wales game, the home Germany game (celebrating a draw ffs!!!), either Czech game .......

Are you confused about what accomplishing a goal means?

.. or scoring one, other than an own one!

I think you need to read your own definition again. Here it is, with the point you haven't understood in bold:

directing and controlling a group of one or more people or entities for the purpose of coordinating and harmonizing that group towards accomplishing a goal.

Staunton had charge of the team for that purpose. And he tried to move the team towards accomplishing that goal. Thus, by your own definition, he managed the team.

I'm done with this; if you think he broke his contract, try your luck in court. Good luck with that.
