In the EFL Team of the week:

    Defender: Paul McShane (Reading)

After having a man sent off in their two previous fixtures, Jaap Stam was no doubt delighted to see Reading keep 11 players on the pitch against then table-toppers Huddersfield Town. And the Dutchman will have been even happier with the display of skipper McShane, who was in imperious form at the back, laying the foundations for a 1-0 win.

He was MOTM for a getreading reporter too.

4 clean sheets I think it is, same as John Egan.

    They should call him Daz.

The Reading Beckenbauer completed 44 more passes than the entire Rotherham team last night.

McShane is another injury doubt in a long list of them.

Here he is getting some Reading teammates to try and pronounce tricky Irish names.

As mentioned on the playoff thread, a moment of madness from McShane has earned him a straight red after a really poor knee high, studs up tackle on Kevin McDonald. He had assisted the Reading goal earlier when he won a tackle (might have been a foul but don't think so) and carried possession towards the Fulham penalty area before passing to Obita, who struck a Kevin Sheedy type shot into the bottom corner.

Disaster for McShane who'll obviously miss the second leg and the chance to captain his side at Wembley should they get there.

Over the years he's had his critics of course, and everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I've been looking at McShane's performances up close and personal this year, and he's been outstanding. He's a different player to what he was three or four years ago. The difference is composure in terms of on the ball. That's something that probably applies to the whole Reading team in fairness with what Jaap Stam has brought to them. Maybe Jaap Stam has brought the best out of Paul as well in terms of playing.

When I watch him play, he's very composed, very settled. He's always been an aggressive defender. When you have a defender like that, you hope the four other guys that are playing with him will be aggressive too, so if he's defending on the front foot, then you'd like to think the rest of them will come with him. Most times, when I’ve seen him play this year, he’s made the right decisions and he’s been correct in the way he’s playing."
Is it really eight years since McShane last won a cap? Surely not.

We're well stocked with centre backs that have been very good for us in general. Duffy & Clark seems to be the preferred partnership with everybody available right now and it could be argued they've had shakier moments than O'Shea & Keogh, certainly in terms of their mistakes leading to goals. I like McShane, but he was given an opportunity against Slovakia and blew it in spectacular fashion I'm afraid. With the likes of Egan, Boyle and Long now on the scene it's hard to see where more opportunities are going to come from. Hunt is being a bit blinkered on this one I think.

Did McShane ever get a run of games or are his caps spread a lot?

Keogh looked awful against Costa Rica and Portugal but was given more chances and settled into being an Intl footballer, apart from the occasional brainfart.

McShane played a few competitive games in a row when he was brought in after Cyprus. Definitely finished that campaign under Kerr as first choice.

It's nice to see that sentiment found wanting in the UK. There are too many circles there where it's acceptable.

    Re-signs for Man Utd!!!

Calm down, he's been appointed u23 coach and registered as an over-age player.

Great opportunity for him, he must be doing something right as a coach.

If he had been a bit bigger and a bit faster ( especially the bit faster ) he could have been a hell of a player. He knocked a good career out of it anyways.

I wonder sometimes when a fella has one or two physical drawbacks can it make him a better coach because he will have to have boxed clever when he was playing to get over these drawbacks !

I saw him on MUTV recently enough (the old man subscribes) recording a podcast. Came across well when speaking about how he made the most of his career and was single minded as to what was best for him, including being strong with Ferguson when he wanted a move.
