Hi all, i'll probably get in trouble for this one, but just after becoming a coach for the first time after yrs of playing but need advice on a few matters, eg team structure, training excercises, drills etc, i have a a good few from experience but just seein if theres much more out there!!!!
Sorry if this bothers people just need pointers in the right direction both on this forum and managing in general!!!

what age group is your team? how good are they, honestly? no point in doing big complicated drills with players who arnt able for it, better starting with slower, easier ones like?
we're a good team, playin senior aul football. decent league too, not too far away from the big guns. bad start to the season and really wanna start turnin the season around. need to develop structure and build up defensive tatics, although we can score goals we're leakin goals. Age ranges from 18 up to 27. I have the respect from the lads but want to get organised as a team on the pitch!! any ideas?
My 2 cents worth...
First of all, figure out why you're leaking goals:
Is it because of individual errors, lack of communication at the back, difficulties with crosses, set pieces or through balls?
Are you holding too high a line at the back allowing your opponents space in behind, or are you standing off, dropping too deep and allowing them too much space in front of you?
Or is it not the back line but the midfield that's the problem?
Once you determine where the problem is (and therefore what you need to work on), you'll be much better set to work out effective drills to rectify the problem.
As regards to general structure, its your job as coach/manager to figure out what its going to be, and to instruct the players accordingly. Whatever system and game plan you decide on, the most important thing is that you're 100% sure in your mind how its supposed to work. If you're uncertain as to how the team is supposed to react in a situation, how are you going to tell them what to do?
So figure out a defensive system, make sure you know what you want, and then spend your time on the training ground making sure the players know what's expected of them.

played tis mornin and drew 2-2, we defo should have won, the back line were fantastic and the strikers worked their socks off but i'm lost with the midfield. they just can't seem to get it together. i played a 3-5-2 to close out the midfield but it just hasn't worked. i need help on tryin to organise the midfield, its where the goals are leakin from. i have an attacking mid, great ball control and great feet, a holding midfielder that can run allday. probably the hardest tackler i've ever played with but no touch or pass and another centre mid that will run all day great ball control and feet but wanders to the ball and exposes the team. any drills out there. my two wingers need fitness but are solid!!!!

It’s the overemphasis on fitness which has taken all semblance of skill from Gaelic Football (hence the re-direction in my original post). Soccer is a much more technical game and coaching should be primarily on that combined with conditioning. Not 90% fitness!!!! If players wanted to run all day long they would join an athletics club.
Excuse me now, but where do you get off threating me with a ban! I responded to a ridiculous comment by insuinating that the poster was giving advise more akin to our GAA friends than a soccer manager. This thread was opened by a new manager looking for advise on training/managing, i'm sure he didn't want advise from a 1950's manual.
But seriously talk about trying to throw your weight about! how is my post Trolling?

Sorry but the humour/innuendo missed my funny bone by a mile.I made a call that you linking to a GAA site in a thread posted by someone looking for advice on football was either an attempt by you to annoy people or else it could end up with you getting slagged off (which it did).
In hindsight I should have removed the comments made about you which I will remove retrospectively.
No tough guys around here that I know of.

my post was not to do with the first post in the thread but was merely pointing out the folly of a statement which implies getting the fitness right is 90% and then the rest is up to magic! i mean come on. surely that type of attitude is not what the orginal poster was hoping when he opened the thread!!!!
