Lee is well worth his inclusion for scoring nearly 20 goals in Division 1 for a very small club. Like it or not, this is a better achievement than Crowe scoring 30 goals against part-timers. Crowe deserves his call up, but to call Lee an insult to the national team, especially when he hasn't done anything, is ridiculous.
He was thinking about declaring for the US after being left out of the Greece game, but you couldn't blame him - he's 24 and probably just wanted to give the manager a reminder that he was there. There's no point waiting around forever in the hope of getting a cap - if he wants to play international football, he might as well be a bit pro-active about it.
And why bother patronising the league with token call-ups to train with the big boys? If a player is in the squad - eL or not - he should be there by merit. Otherwise it means nothing.
