Durban gears up for 2010 draw
24 August 2007
South Africa's "Surf City" hosts the first official event leading up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the preliminary draw for the qualifying tournament, on 25 November. The draw, which determines the qualifying groups for soccer's showpiece competition, will be a sizeable event in its own right.
The entire Durban International Convention Centre has been booked out to accommodate the large number of Fifa officials, representatives of countries taking part in the draw, and more than 300 journalists from around the world who will be covering the event.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

just because the stadiums wont be ready and we wont be there that doesnt make it the biggest farce.
Was in Johannesburg recently for the first time & lets just say the airport makes Dublin look efficient. A lot of building & renovation work but the main problems seemed to be organisation.
I believe the stadium will be ready basically as I heard they only building one new stadium in Cape Town. They have also scaled back the capacity to keep costs down.
They could have problems with communications although I am sure they will install dedicated lines & such. The broadband infrastructure again makes Ireland look Developed.
I don't see why it should be a farce. Is it because it is in Africa?
World Cup could be a bug success for them as I am sure they will use to advertise their tourist industry like we do at Eurovision, Ryder Cup etc...
There is a few new stadiums and to be fair there was a large amount of politics being played. The Cape Town one was supposed to be a renovation of Newlands but the WPRU who own the grounds refused to let them make the amount of changes they were proposing so they have had to build a new one. Initially the local council refues to fund it as they said it wasn't needed so the National Govt had to intervene.
The Jo'Burg Airport renovation has been badly needed and is being done in preparation for the World Cup, the country as a whole seem to be getting their act together for it. I'm hoping to be living over there in time for it.
Reports I've read have suggested that the country's infrastructure won't be able to handle the World Cup, couple that with the problems with the stadia and I come to my farce conclusion
They put on a good face on football foucs yesterday and seemed to be ahead on their build plan .
I was happy to hear that they would offer "cheap tickets" so even the locals could go along and see a game as not all are rich by a very long way . All that is a long way off yet but it holds promise I must say .
Sure you wouldn't want to be at a World Cup in South Africa anyway. You'd probably be shot when being carjacked....![]()
Seth Efrica.
...is that once Blatter got his chance to "bring" the World Cup to Japan/Korea, South Africa and back to Brazil, he quits on the rotation policy. He's a fcuking shammer, and I hope he rots. I couldn't care less whether Africa has had 20 world cups or none, they deserve it on merit or they don't. It remains to be seen whether it does deserve to host it or not.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!
Football is supposed to be a world game so they need to make an effort to spread it across the continents. There are a limited number of countries that can hold the tournament & I do think FIFA are correct to assist less developed countries in getting the tournament otherwise will just have the largest countries buying votes.
South Africa would possibly have better infrastructure than Brazil but I have never been to Brazil.
I think its brilliant, the whole world will be looking at it and the more glaring it is the better. That's exactly whats needed imo, paper over the cracks fair enough, it'll probably happen in Europe as well but nothing wrong with a dose of reality.

Don't bring a gun along either. It'll be taken off you at the door of the bars as you are searched. The police stations have Armed Response Phone Numbers emblazoned on their roofs. Some areas are pretty dodgy it has to be said but you could say that about Limerick as well I suppose.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
