    Car Parts, Car Breakers etc...

Anyone recommend a good car breaker? I've been trying to look some up online and am having limited success.

I've a 2000 Punto and the gearbox has packed up on it bang on schedule ...best offer I've gotten is 250 bucks for a box out of a 2003.

Also packed up is the electronic power steering unit. I'm having no joy there at all. That job could cost a grand on it's own if I've to go through a fiat dealer.

Should I even bother? Should I not just push it off a cliff somewhere and claim some knacks took it? Trade it in? can you even trade cars in anymore?

most garages will give you a scrapage value depending on the car you are trading and buying 1000-1500 is normally quoted, its your best bet as its knackered .

If you want to claim knacks took it its not a good idea to put that on a forum & it would prob affect your insurance premium making a claim

I know but the car only has 54,000 miles on the clock. seems very wasteful -yet I don't want to chuck money at the thing either. I bought a shaggin Punto so I WOULDN'T have to spend money on it.

True. But that was just a sample lie.

How much would the car be worth once you fixed it up? How much would it cost to purchase a similar replacement.

I don't know how much a 2nd hand gear box worth but I would think any decent car breakers yard would keep them which might keep the price down. Power steering unit might be a bit more difficult to source. You should also note that could cost a bit in labour to get those parts fitted.

Without both those fixes your car will possibly cost you E100-200 to get a breaker to take it off you as at 7 years more or less worthless to them.

    .
Looking at the ads in the local papers I wouldn't get more than 2500 bucks for a 00 punto.

Just got a quote from a UK company for a reconditioned power-steering unit UKSTG 287 + VAT and delivery !!!! that's over 500 bucks easily.

I dunno about that now. that's a bit doomsday. A breaker took a 14 year old Renault 5 off me a couple of years back. I got nothing for it but wasn't charged either.

In Dublin 4 years ago when I was dumping an old car breaker said they would not pay for anything over 7-8 years. They obviously charge to collect but maybe only E100 to take off me. In the end the dealer I bought replacement off too it for nothing.

A 7 year old Punto with crocked gear box & power steering can't be worth much?

No I wouldn't expect I'd get anything for it.

Am now seriously considering taking it to some shower of vampires like auto-Xchange and getting my "guarenteed minimum €2000 part-exchange".

Sourced a gearbox s/hand for 250 out of a 03. dunno what the mileage on that 03 was but all bets are off on it if it's anywhere near the 50,000 mark (which mine passed and promptly croaked).

Is the gear box completely dead? I remember driving around in old Uno (pre Punto for younger posters) with no 1st gear until I got the box replaced. Its surprising how little you really need 1st gear

No it's working -not perfectly obviously but still has a decent degree of function. Screams like there's an empty biscuit tin under the hood in 1st and 2nd. No probs at all in 3,4,5 or reverse.
