Galway United 2 - 2 Athlone Town

Just listening to the updates on Galway Bay FM. Seems to have been a fairly lively game. We got one yellow card, they got about four or five with Goldbey sent off for a second bookable offence.

Both of our strikers scored, and there has been plenty in the papers by Jimmy saying he is going to have someone new very soon.

Conor scored a header against us! Typical! We came back twice though, and have now held our own against two of the favoured sides in the Division.

Next up is Finn Harps this Tuesday at 7:45 in Saint Mel's.

Well done lads, this shows improvement and that we can live with the so called big boys. Great to see the two forwards scoring.

Galway United 2-2 Athlone Town

Galway United's first home game of the season ended in a disappointing draw, as Athlone twice came from behind to deny United. Athlone Town were a much improved side in comparison to the Athlone team United easily beat twice last season.

The first chance of the game fell to Alan Murphy when his twenty yard free kick hit the post on 11 minutes. On 17 minutes debutant Benny Lawless had a shot that went across the face of the goal. On 36 minutes Dave Goldbey had a great chance to open the scoring after a Conor Frawley downward header fell to him four yards out from goal, but his shot went high over the crossbar. On 41 minutes Tony Folan had an effort just inches wide after good work by Benny Lawless found him unmarked on the right hand side of the box. Athlone offered very little threat in the first half and Galway got the goal they just about deserved when a poor goal kick by the Athlone keeper was knocked into the path of Alan Murphy who sprinted clear and coolly slotted the ball home.


Athlone came into life in the second half and on 54 minutes got an equaliser when Michael McCann gave Robert Forde no chance from twenty yards out. Athlone nearly took the lead when a minute later a dipping volley came off the crossbar.

The game swung in the away teams advantage when Dave Goldbey received a second yellow card on 64 minutes. The dismissal however woke up a lacklustre United side. On 74 minutes after good work by Tony Folan, Alan Murphy had a header that was just wide with the keeper beaten. On 79 minutes Colin Fortune saw his left foot effort go wide and right of the upright after Alan Murphy found him in space. A minute later Galway received a free when Tony Folan was bundled over. From the resulting free Conor Frawley headed home on his debut. That lead barely lasted 60 seconds, when Athlone were awarded a free just inside the Galway half and the ball was played forward to the free Andy Mullan who ran into the box and gave Robert Forde no chance. There was a hint of offside, but Tony Mannion will be disappointed that the United rearguard was not more alert to the danger.




Galway pressed for a winner but the only real chance they had was an Alan Murphy free kick in injury time which was narrowly wide.

This is an encouraging result and from reading the report above it sounds like we played some good, creative football.
Well done to the lads and lets hope we can build on this with another good performance against Finn Harps.
