glynn is from the same scout that brought us Murphs and Sean Malee to name 2 Michael Murphy who is working closely with Tony on bringing in the cream of up and coming players from Mayo and Roscommon.

Geezer we know each other too long to fall out over GUFC its a love supreme as Pa might say.

Thumbs up Chairman of the league

is former United director Eamon Naughton. Many the difference of opinion we had with him but im sure most united fans and i certainly would like to congratulate him on his elevation to the top eircom league post. He done more than his fair share to help united along the way.

I think it's unfair to say that the players don't give 100%.

Players like Dave Cooke and Philip Reilly aren't good enough for this level but they always try their best. The problem is we have no-one else to play in their positions. I thought Reilly was bad but Wes Charles is a total calamity at left full, he has been at fault for goals every time I've seen him play there.

I wouldn't say Tony's signings have been a disaster either. Armstrong was questionable as he had a terrible scoring record in the league and was injury prone but he only played one league game, same for Yeboah.
The rest of them have all been decent enough from what I've seen and I think Robson looks a v promising player. Shaun Fagan came from a poor Scottish Division 3 club which is probably a similar standard to Mervue/Salthill Devon.

To me it would be a crazy decision to bring in a new manager during the summer assuming we stay up. Next year is when the real test comes and if we're performing to the same levels then I'd probably agree but it makes no sense to replace and bring in someone else who'll want his own players etc.

We can't afford to wait for the real test to see if the manager is up to it. If Longford hadn't their 6 points deeducted, and Shels hadn't been booted out (and not Waterford coming up) we would be in a right mess.
What benefit has full time football been? Rememebr, its 3 down next season.
I do agree most of the signings have been pretty decent, and were an improvement on what we had. Squad still very light, need cover at ventre back, full back, a right sided midfielder (or left and throw Derek on the right) and a couple of strikers

If Longford had their 6 points we'd still be ahead of them and the way Shels started the season I think we'd be well ahead of them too.

We've only lost as many games as Sligo who are 5th, our problem is to convert the draws into wins.

Personally I see no reason why Cousins should be let go and I don't think it would benefit the team at all - we'd just have another season of rebuilding.
Remember when Cousins took over last season we didn't look like getting promoted at all, in the end we finished 3rd but at one stage we were top.

Also just in relation to the budgets Rovers budget is much smaller than United's, very few of their players have ever played regularly for other Premier Division clubs. Most of their players are average but they just have an exceptional manager who makes them terrified to make mistakes!

Whereas are players get the 5 star treatement no matter what result/performance they garner.

Drop all the luxuries until our players show they're 100% committed to the cause and not just a bunch of free riders.

I think if there were to be change of manager at the end of the season we would definitely be going down the following season as it would take them too much time to get the players they want and then try and get them to gel for a new season, a season that will be probably the toughest season seen in Irish football ever.

    Don't agree with that theory.

If TC was sacked in November a new manager would by hired by December.

That's 3 full months to get your philosophy, players and set up imbeded into the Club.

If TC stays he's going to be given money to buy players. If we then get off to a nightmare start and he's sacked in April/May we'd be in a far more precarious position.A new manager coming in during the midst of the season and with a whole bunch of players who he had nothing to do with in bringing to UTD.

For a Ratio of Budget:Performance/League Position we're easily the worst.
GUFC is a Business. In any well wun organisation if you don't deliver results you don't keep your job.Tony has so far delivered 4 results.Hardly the best use of the excellent resources available to him.

Conor, just wondering, what's all these luxeries you speak of the players getting? You always say they're treated like royalty etc. Not wumming, just genuinely want to know what you mean by it?

Won't go on about them here-but they're easily the best treated players in the League.

I was wondering that too Sligoman.

Perhaps ConorH is referring to the new flashy bus that the players travel on which has reclining seats, Air Con, tables, toilet etc etc.. Also, I heard that the team somtimes book hotel rooms for a snooze before kick off at long distance away games (but I really don't know if that's true or not).

    Both are True AFAIK.

Doubt Waterford or Bray had such priviliges when they came down and outplayed us in Terryland.

Anyone will tell you they're treated top class-which is a great thing and a credit to GUFC.
However this is what annoys people.for all they're given we wouldn't mind a few wind here and there and not to be embarrased by Pub teams in Terryland.Or hammered by part time teams.

TC gave his own expectations for the year, which weren't exactly high,he's failed on 2 of them.

It might seem like i'm been pessimistic but facts are facts and if you wan't to go places you have to make tough calls.
We're never going to go anywhere if we accept low standards(on the pitch).Scully is the prime example of how with the right ethic you can go far.
Rovers had a much lower budget that ours(despite what rubbish gufct says) and are a part time outfit. They finished 3 points ahead of us last season.
We went and bought the players and embarked on a full time set up.yet look at where we are and they are.
When asked at the start of the season would he be happy with survival he replied...."No"....."We're Shamrock Rovers FC....We're going to win the League"
TC should adopt the same attitude.GUFC isn't just some yo-yo club where players can come and play with little expectation or pressure to deliver.Come here to win or get lost.
If he mentions one more time that it's difficult to get players to come here aswell.....
Galway is a great place to live......Sligo is not-look at the team they have!

There is no point changing the manager in the off season.

TC will bring in new players, I have no doubt about that.
Can, or will he, get rid of, the 7/8 full-time professional players that are obviously not up the standard required at the moment ?

He also needs to move to Galway on a full-time basis. What I call the "Galway ethos" means that some players here will always need to be closely supervised and monitored in order to achieve optimum performance. Without this, you have a culture where messers, instead of being constantly booted up the arse, actually are a bad influence on other players.

Because of being well run off the pitch (no cheques bouncing) and practically zero expectation on it (avoid relegation), GUFC has become a safe haven for chancers over the past few seasons. The fact that the manager is based in Dublin only compounds this.

But if they weren't removed from the Premier Division, there would have been no sinking ship for so many 'rats' to jump from

On the flip side, we have won fewer games than anyone else, and as for Rovers players being terrified of their manager, as United have a bigger budget, maybe it would be no harm to bring in a manager the players here were terrified of, surely then we would be in second ourselves!!

A manager the players would be terrified of. Hmm Roddy Collins, Alex Ferguson? Who pray tell would we bring and we wouldn't be able to have the right man appointed within one month we would be just tryin to fill the gap. As Pa says Tcs metal will be tested at the end of the season as nearly 1/3 of the squad need to be let go. That will leave us space in the budget to strenghten the squad with quality players to add to the ones we have

    its a tough call

but if tc is gonna clear out 7/8 slackers it will be a new team anyway. A new dynamic brought about by a fresh manager may do the trick but is as risky as keeping TC i suppose unless its , dolan, fenlon, kenny or scully men who have won championships and have desire to give it all. I just think with this team, the football they play is absolute ****e and with an ex goalie and fitness coach with the team most of the week and the rookie manager away is it any wonder. Im sure he would have way more to offer if he was actually based here and on the training pitch throughout the week with his team after all he is only learning the trade himself.
UTd cant take many chances next season with 3 down imagimne the pain of going down and an empty terryland
