Haven't heard the Klaxons album, glad the Monkeys didn't win it again though. To be honest I think the Mercury has gone down a lot in recent years, ever since MsDynamite won it it just hasn't felt as important
klaxons won.. yay!
everyone was expecting that tard amy winohouse to win. but she didn't!
klaxons album was the best on that list imo.. easily

monkeys were never gonna win it as they won it already..
klaxons album is very good. Very dark and different, as someone said im just glad that diseased slag didnt win it. Fcuk off to rehab Winehouse.
I think Winehouse should've gotten it. Best act there by far.
Think the Klaxons album is a damn fine one. Very inventive and possibly the best cover this decade 'It's Not Over Yet' on it too. The 'nu-rave' tag annoys me though. Nothing ravey about it. But great choice to win it. Honestly thought Fionn Regan would be a dark horse for it.
'Fascists dress in black and go round telling people what to do, where as priests.....'
was hoping fionn regan would of won it.
No, that was my point. Dummy is a great album as is the first winner Screamadelica which is still a regular visitor to the cd player. but there have for my money only 3 absoltue duds which shouldn't have won,
Jebus, I personally agree that Radiohead should have won one by now, I'm no blur fan but again they must have been contenders but part of the reason for the mercury award is to provoke debate about the respective merits in different albums in any given year and the awards generally do just that.
That's fair enough. There's been a few slightly iffy nominations over the last few years actually...
2005-Coldplay "X&Y"
2004-Streets "A Grand Dont Come For Free"
2003-The Thrills "So much for the city"
But surely the worst nominations in the history of the event...
1998-Robbie Williams 'Life Through A Lens"
1997-Spice Girls "Spice"
'Fascists dress in black and go round telling people what to do, where as priests.....'
Looking through the Mercurys history I see it as (yep i'm bored)
Year - What Won - What Should Have Won - Factor
1992 - Primal Scream - Primal Scream - Simply Red
1993 - Suede - Suede - None Really
1994 - M People - Blur - M People
1995 - Portishead - Portishead - How good the nominee list was
1996 - Pulp - Pulp - Artists for War Child getting nominated
1997 - Roni Size - The Prodigy - Spice Girls
1998 - Gomez - Massive Attack - Robbie Williams
1999 - Talvin Singh - Blur - How poor the nominee list was
2000 - Badly Drawn Boy - Badly Drawn Boy - Wasn't this the year of Kid A?
2001 - PJ Harvey - Super Furries - Nothing really
2002 - Ms Dynamite - The Streets - Ms Dynamite
2003 - Dizzee Rascal - Lemon Jelly - Worst nominees ever
2004 - Franz Ferdinand - Belle & Sebastian - Joss Stone, Keane etc.
2005 - Antony & the Jonstons - The Go Team - Hard Fi, Kaisers etc.
2006 - Arctic Monkeys - Richard Hawley - Finally another good nominee list!
2007 - Klaxons - Amy Winehouse - A Now Indie 2007 List if ever I saw one
All in all looking through the full nominee list it really shows how the quality in main stream indie music has died a death since the mid-90s, it really makes for depressing reading when you look at the 1995 nominee list that included Elastica Elastica, Leftfield Leftism, PJ Harvey To Bring You My Love, Portishead Dummy, Supergrass I Should Coco, and Tricky Maxinquaye amongst others including Van Morrison and put it up against the modern garbage that is being churned out.
The winners as I think they should have been are all taken from the shortlists provided, I notice how albums like Kid A, In It For The Money, Radiator and the like never even made a shortlist, when all three would have been worthy winners of the overall prize, but thems the breaks I suppose
Ha ha was just about to do a similar list but ya beat me to it! Think Chemical Brothers 'Dig Your Own Hole' and 'Surrender' should have sneaked a victory in those years.
More 's
Mark Morrison ~ Return of the mack (1996) WTF!!!!
Take that ~ Everything changes (1994)
Suede ~ Coming up (1997) Nowhere near their best.
Radiohead ~ Amnesiac (2001) What, no Kid A?
The Darkness - Permission to land (2003) Explains itself really.
More could haves, maybe should haves
Death in Vegas ~ The Contino Sessions (2000)
Doves - The last broadcast (2002)
