It may be poor reading but at least it's honest. If any thing it's a touch too high. I'd guess the real average is about 11500-12000, per game thats 2400. Not too bad for a small country with 2 other codes of football to compete with ( a situation unique in europe to ourselves, the IL and parts of the north of England)
EL grounds are like good episodes of The Simpsons, no matter how many times you see them they're still funny

The numbers are bound to increase as the summer approaches & no footie on tv. I don't think the GAA much of a threat but friday evening matches will ensure no clashes there either.

With Rovers having their own home & maybe UCD relegated is good scope for increased numbers next season also.

Not ahving a go at you but if there were 4500 at the Pats game in Cork surely there were less on Friday, going by the telly.

There was a lot more than 4,500 at the Pats game.
    5,500 I'd say.

    Czech attendances

    Hey lads,

I was in Prague at the weekend - really great place. On Monday morning I picked up a newspaper, however the only bit I could really understand was the sports section.

From what I can make out (and I am open to be corrected) the average crowd for the final round of games which, were at the weekend, was 2,146. The highest crowd was 4,538 for Olomouc v Slavia Prague, the lowest 400 for Bohemians v Synot and the total crowd for all 8 games was 17,165.

I think these figures are about the same as the eircom league, but obviously the Czech league produces teams which are much more successful in Europe - including Viktoria Zizkov (the team who played near the hostel I was staying in), who knocked Rangers out of last season's UEFA cup, and who qualified for the UEFA cup again on the last day of the season. My main point here is that there must be something more fundamental responsible for the poor quality of teams in the eL (compared to other leagues) than raw attendance figures.

reply to crc on czech attendences.

sure alot of their players would be locals or from the poorer countries around them with no propper league. thats our problem the countries around us have big leagues like the premiership and scotland and also the gaa are taking some of our best players. could you imagine what the kerry team would be like if their gaelic players played soccer well i think they would have some of the most skillful players in the league.

There's a website somewhere that compares crowds in European football and apart from England, italy and Spain no where gets huge attendances. You have places like Scotland and Portugal with one or two teams get big crowds with the others all way under 10,000. Even places like Belgium struggle with crowds generally. The problem is we'll always be compared to England and we're not going to compete. If we had 7-10,000 at every game, I'd be very happy (I know it means doublin and trebling attendances but last week there was 10,000 people at LOI football in Dublin so we're heading in the right way...)

IMO if the Premier League got to averaging 5k a match in the near future it would be a significant step. I get the impression some of the middling coun tries in europe have their average crowds boosted by big local derbies which bring in 3-4 times the average crowd plus they get a lot more tv money

You should add at least 1,000 to that Pats Bohs crowd. Best crowd we've had in years... One of the papers had the crowd at 6,200.

In terms of facilities we're slowly improving and hopefully we'll continue (if Pats planned new stand comes out we're talking about a flagship stand...) All the Uk clubs (including the North) had the Football Trust to help build their grounds and most other countries have some sort of local government funding. Although we have grants, generally speaking they're paltry enough.

Money, I'd say those Czech teams are getting more money from TV and sponsorship than any EL team could dream of.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.
