Athlone Town 0-1 Cobh Ramblers
Cobh Ramblers striker Willie Bruton, who looked all set to leave for Cork City during the close season, began the season as he ended the last one with the only goal of the game against Athlone Town at St Mel’s Park on Saturday night.
Bruton bagged nine goals in the final five games of last season to propel Cobh into the end-of-season play-offs, his late flurry sending him to the top of the First Division scoring charts in the process.
That form made him a target for new Cork manager Pat Dolan, and he even turned out as a guest for the Leesiders in a pre-season friendly against the University of Limerick at one stage.
But he subsequently agreed to stay at St Colman’s Park, and the Ramblers fans will certainly be happy with that following his match-winning goal against Town at the weekend.
Bruton scored the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half, latching onto a Michael Brosnan long through ball to beat Athlone keeper David Moran.
