Don't be using the Scottish rags "quotes". Lawwell was misquoted that day.

Charlton are favourites to sign him. If it comes down to money Charlton are certs. You don't join Celtic for the money.

He has signed a four and a half year deal with Charlton according to Sky Sports news. Having a medical tomorrow.

Hope it works out for him but I would have advised against such a move. You're better off going to a team that is winning, Charlton are a club on the verge of a crisis, and there will be immediate pressure on Stokes to score goals, if he doesn't...

I went to see Forest-Charlton today and this might not be such a good move for Stokes after all. Charlton were absolutely hopeless - no effort and no fight in them. With Bent gone/injured the onus will be on him to get the goals to keep em up but the midfield do not create anything, the poor lad could be frustrated. Hasselbaink is only thinking about retirement and BMW's when out on the pitch!!! To put things into perspective Forest have been very average all season but played well today -

A few of the Forest lads went on 2nd Jan and caused a bit of trouble (made all the local news and it came the very next day after their 5 nil thrashing so fans were not impressed) - a few ex players were with some of the senior forest players and Andy Reid was one of them apparently..... good to see him resting that hamstring!!!

You'll NEVER beat the Irish.......you'll just draw with us instead!!!

Bendtner was stretchered off in a 2 all draw with Newcastle today added with the fact that Lupoli wants to go back to Italy could actually change the face of the Stokes saga. Still no official word on where he has signed, so any chance Wenger has decided to keep him?

Yeah!! Heard it Sky Sports news last night. Very disapointed to be honest . I would've thought Charlton would have been third choice behind Sunderland and Celtic.... He made some noises about signing for Celtic Earlier in the year.

Charlton are on a downward spiral. As far as I've read they don't have much money to spend so such an investment indicates to me that they're selling Darren Bent very soon. Hopefully pardew can turn it around. They're six points away from safety though. They say that once you're more than one result from getting out of the zone it's time to start worrying.

I'm surprised Aston Villa showed no interest. They need a forward and O'Neill knows the scottish game so would have some measure of his ability.

I'd be pretty sure it went down to money as Celtic don't pay premiership wages. The reported wage he was offered by Charlton is what Maloney is looking for and they won't pay him. Nakamura is on less than £20k a week, along with most players. The max you'd get is £30k. Stokes would have been given less than £10k in his first season at Celtic.

Does not appear to be any official announcement about signing for Charlton. I still think he is going to Sunderland.

Interesting move. A year or two in the Championship might be good for him. Let's hope he lives up to the hype.

    From todays Indo:

Keane gets his man as Stokes signs on

THE Anthony Stokes transfer saga should come to an end today when the Dubliner completes a medical and signs on the dotted line at Sunderland after the persuasion of Roy Keane influenced the Dubliner's decision to snub Charlton.

Last-minute efforts by Keane and chairman Niall Quinn on Saturday evening resulted in a dramatic turn of events just after Stokes had given an interview explaining why he had chosen Charlton over the alternative options.

"It was a very, very tough call but the prospect of playing in the Premiership was what drew me to Charlton," said the 18-year-old.

Yet that would all change when Sunderland swooped with a decisive intervention by matching the £17,000-a-week offer on the table from the London club.

And when Keane contacted the player after watching his side exit the FA Cup at the hands of Preston on Saturday afternoon, he convinced him again that choosing the Championship side was the right option.

It's understood that Stokes was keen on a move to Sunderland anyway after meeting Keane for marathon talks on Friday, but advisors were leaning towards Charlton due to the financial package the relegation battlers were offering.

When the Irish connection at the Stadium of Light came up with the financial goods then the path was cleared for Stokes to follow up his preferred option of working with Keane and joining the green contingent on Wearside.

    Cash-strapped

Arsenal will receive a combined total of £2.7million for his services while cash-strapped eircom League champions Shelbourne, the club Stokes left as a schoolboy to join the Gunners, are waiting to see if they will benefit from the deal.

It had been anticipated that Stokes would complete a medical in Sunderland yesterday but that should now take place today instead.

Officially, the Black Cats have refused to comment until a deal is done - similar to the manner in which the transfer of Luton midfielder Carlos Edwards was handled last week.

I'm with Gordon Strachan on this one. If the boy really is putting money in front of ambition then he deserves to achieve mediocrity.

Don't agree. I believe the opposite. Going up to play in the SPL shows a lack of ambition to test yourself week in week out against quality opposition (instead of just doing it a handful of times in the Champions league every other season). Stokes will very possibly be playing in the Premiership next season if he joins Sunderland as I reckon they still have a good chance at promotion. This is where he should be if he's as good as he thinks he is.

That's complete and utter bull****, you speak of a lack of ambition, you gain far more exposure playing for someone Celtic or Rangers than playing for Wigan or any of these lower ranked premiership teams, how many players at Sunderland would be good enough to even make the Celtic squad!! Ok your right in saying the oppposition it not quite up to scratch in Scotland, but players like Camara who couldn't hack it at Celtic, look at Bardlsley who's leaving for Villa couldn't get a game at Rangers, Ther is also no guarantee Stokes will play in the premiership next season, Sunderland are'ny exactly flying at present
