The rumour I heard is that he doesn't want to be involved in the Rep of Ireland v Scotland game and that is why the "thinking of club football until the summer" line has come out.
If that is the case then surely he could be called up for the Macedonia game capped towards the end if the game is in the bag. Start against NI and then pick up a little knock come the Scotland game.

That would be a win-win. It should be let die until the Macedonia game. Trapp should call him up and Jamie should appear and be capped if he's fit and good enough to play (based on training etc.) then we can get back to the real issue here which is qualifying!
There is no such thing as a miracle cure, a free lunch or a humble opinion.

If James is injured for Macedonia game he needs to make some manner of gesture to the Irish team to end the speculation. Whether it's travelling with the team or simply holding a press conference or interview giving his support to the team.

Otherwise we'll have yet another tabloid frenzy that does nobody any good other than those who profit from selling rag newspapers

Once the gesture doesn't involve him giving us the finger, I'll be happy. Can I also say a thank you to James for providing some discussion on here in the last few weeks because it's been that quiet of late that I think we might soon see tumbleweed on our computer screens. Now might be a good time to start taking the p##s out of Ealing Green and Not Brazil to liven things up a bit!

Martinez is certainly wrapping McCarthy in cotton wool. He didn't start last night. So the longer this story runs, the better it is for Martinez.

About that rumour from the TA board.
'the rumour I heard is that he doesn't want to be involved in the Rep of Ireland v Scotland game and that is why the "thinking of club football until the summer" line has come out.'

To my understanding that is not even a rumour. It is taken from the article in the Guardian,
    where it was written,
"It may be the summer when McCarthy decides"
because, the journalist thought that "McCarthy is unlikely to want involvement" in the game against Scotland.

    All pure conjecture.

A United Ireland within 100 years. Absolutely inevitable.

    Scottish Telegraph:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...Caldwell.html#
James McCarthy should not rush his decision over switch to Scotland, urges Stephen Caldwell

As speculation mounts that James McCarthy could switch from the Republic of Ireland to Scotland, Stephen Caldwell, who played in the Scots’ Carling Nations Cup win over Northern Ireland in Dublin, declared that he is not trying to influence his Wigan team-mate to change.

Caldwell has admitted to a mentoring role in respect of his younger colleague and the Scotland defender’s presence in the same club dressing room has prompted some Irish observers to suggest that he has an interest in swaying McCarthy’s loyalty.

“I’m not aware of any talks going on in the background. They are citing me as a mover – that’s interesting. Maybe I’ll sue!” Caldwell joked, before agreeing that the midfield player – who has drawn praise for his development since leaving Hamilton Accies last summer – would represent a coup for Scotland if he does choose to accept international duties under Craig Levein.

“He’d be a tremendous addition for Scotland. He’s playing for Ireland just now and I have friends who play for Ireland and I’m sure they want to keep him,” said Caldwell. “I’m sure he’ll make the right call and I won’t force him into a decision. We want good players and if he wants to play for us then I’m sure there will be a place for him. He’s pure class and as fit as anyone I’ve seen. He’s strong even though he’s quite small and wiry. He’s under great guidance from Roberto Martinez, Graeme Jones and the rest of the staff.”

Giovanni Trapattoni said after the Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 victory over Wales in the Carling Nations Cup that he will include the Glasgow-born McCarthy – who qualifies to play for Ireland through the grandparent rule – in his squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Macedonia in March. However, Martinez did not rule out the possibility that the player could swap a green jersey for the dark blue of Scotland.

“I do not know if it is a decision for him to make now or not. We need to give him plenty of time. We need to respect him,” said the Wigan manager.

If McCarthy should opt for Scotland, he will be competing for selection in the strongest department of Levein’s squad, as Caldwell acknowledged. “We already have some fantastic footballers in the Scotland midfield but the more the merrier.

“Competition breeds success and it pushes everyone to play better. I think he’d be a great addition to the Scotland squad.”

As for his own appearance against Northern Ireland – made possible by injury to his brother, Gary – Caldwell expressed satisfaction, although he was denied a goal from a Charlie Adam corner kick by a combination of the crossbar and failure to get his header away properly.

“I enjoyed the 90 minutes and the clean sheet and I’m so optimistic for the future of Scottish football,” he said. “There is a togetherness that’s developing and becoming stronger every trip.

“I should have scored. It was a fantastic ball in from Charlie and just dipped at the last minute.

“I didn’t get it cleanly and it came off my shoulder. I was a bit disappointed but I’d rather have a clean sheet than score.

“The game was a continuation of the way we played against the Faroes. We moved the ball well, we were sharp and we stopped them – overall a good performance.

“I felt we dropped a bit with the substitutions. It’s only natural as it’s hard for guys to come up and be up to speed right away.

“For 60 minutes it was superb and the boss did the right thing to give others a chance. We lost a bit of the edge, but we didn’t lose a goal and we kept the basics right.”

Kris Commons, who scored Scotland’s third to add to a sequence that has seen him find the net for Celtic against Aberdeen in the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final and against Rangers in last week’s Scottish Cup Old Firm derby, echoed Caldwell’s thoughts about the performance.

“We played well, we kept the ball well, we had good positions and the interchanging between players meant we looked more like a club team than an international side,” said Commons.
From the direct quotes, it's another non-story, but thought I'd post it anyway.

When sport journalists write articles and make statements shouldn't it be based on a source/fact? Guessing what somebody has said and then proclaiming it as fact is pure lunacy.
"If God had meant football to be played in the air, he'd have put grass in the sky." Brian Clough.

We are currently experiencing a period known as 'the calm'.

'The storm' will be along shortly, possibly as early as next month..

Would it not be more apt to describe this as the 'Eye'?
