McCarthy was supposedly being looked at by all the top clubs in the world and ended up at Wigan. That is in itself a major disappointment.

At this point, I would have expected him to be at least on the bench for Wigan, but he's not. No, I'm not prepared to allow him a full season for "adjustment".

As far as I'm concerned, this season will have been a total waste for McCarthy if a twenty minute sub appearance at Manchester United and an FA Cup third round goal against Hull's reserves are the highlights of his season.

this thread is about over-rated players, and McCarthy certainly fits into that category given the hype that has surrounded him for the past three years. He's done nothing, absolutely nothing at the top level. A goal against a Hull reserve team in an early round of a cup that nobody cares about anymore is not going to change my opinion of him, sorry.

I'm cautious about getting too carried away when you look at over-hyped busts we've had in recent years such as Anthony Stokes and James McCarthy.

McCarthy has never shown he is capable of anything at the top level. There's nothing wrong with that, plenty of players can get it done at the semi-professional level like the LOI and the MLS, but fail at the top level. McCarthy is one of those players I fear.

He has knuckeled down and now he is seeing the benefit of that. I do think Martinez is a perfect manager for him at this stage in his career.

Yes, being a regular in a side that won the champions league, lost in another champions league final and have won four leagues. God O'Shea really had some disgraceful seasons after his first one. In each of those '****e' years he played at least 30 league games, with the exception of 04/05, where he started 23, and 07/08 where he started 28. Yes he had some very bad performances in those years but to say he was ****e for years is a bit of a joke. I don't know why I always tend to bite when i see your posts

O'Shea is a mediocre player. I think he may be Fergies lovechild or something that Fergie has not off-loaded him years ago. Should have gone to the likes of Villa or Newcastle long ago if he had any sense but sadly was content to be a sub and take the easy money.

This one of the better posts that bohsRap should have used as an example of how you are ruining this forum. Lots of negative opinions about Irish players that generally don't match up with the real facts.
O'Shea has been injured for a large part of this season so it's unfair to use any stats but last season he played 54 games and the majority were as a starter. So he could harld be considered as a sub.
Also to say he should go to a team like Newcastle or Villa is a bit bizzare as both are in different divisions.

Mostly agree with that.

There's no point in hyping McCarthy up to be this sort of wunderkid that we can build up, and then tear down when he has a poor game. Having said that (and I hope I don't jinx him), I think McCarthy is one of our better prospects and I think he'll at very least be part of the Irish set-up in years to come.

In fact the only players you can guarantee on being in Ferguson's side on match day are Rooney, Van der Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra. Every other spot is in rotation for even the biggest games. Even some of Ferguson's favourites like Carrick and Fletcher are left out depending on the opposition. The guy started 42 games last year for Man Utd.

But yeah, he's nothing but a sub, he should have showed a little ambition and won the Championship this year with Newcastle like you suggested.
