He played in a sort of advanced role on the left, didn't get into the game much, it was over as a contest anyway by the time he got on.
Good to see he's in the manager's first team thoughts anyway.
will be interesting, long term, to see if McCarthy's box to box style is coached out of him to an extent playing alongside Sinclair or if a 3 man midfield is deployed.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.
How many times have you seen McCarthy play? I live in Canada too and today was only the second time he's been on TV here.
im waiting to watch that game - that will be the second or third time ill have seen him. I have seen lots of highlights (Hamilton and irish underage teams) of him online and on tv for Hamilton when i was back home.
Why?

You just seem extremely well informed on his style of play. "McCarthy's box to box style". I watched him chase a ball around for twenty minutes on the left hand side of midfield today.
From the few times I've seen MCarthy I'd have said the term "box to box" is accurate.
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?

I think he's a player who could end up being a box-to-box midfielder, or even a second-forward type of attacking midfielder like Gerrard has become.
I think the reason he played such an advanced role for Hamilton is because he was Hamilton's best and most techically gifted player therefore they put him in a position to help create and score goals. But he's always been brilliant for me off the ball and tracks back like someone that has played the game for years. I certainly wouldn't class him as an attacking player no matter what position he plays for the time being.
Looks like he is going to make his full debut for Wigan tonight in the Carling Cup

not boding too well for wigan so far..

McCarthy subbed off half way through the second half. think they were 3-0 down at that stage. I guess he'll need a while to adapt to the higher standard of football in England.
just reading the minute by minute report on BBC .. he seemed to have quite a few touches of the ball, had a few shots saved and also took a couple of free kicks. hopefully he can kick on now and get to be in the first team squad.
Funny wigan are in serious trouble though and people were saying that he could not afford to go to a relegation fodder team. I had a feeling wigan would find themselves in this situation and given the heavy loses im not sure martinez can turn this around. Mores the point if wigan go down and mccarthy has an average season its going to be 3 or 4 years before we probably see him back in the premiership.....

no DM is an agnostic depressed optimist, I'm merely pointing out what I think is right.
