Liam Ridgewell escaped punishment for a touchline tackle on James McCarthy but Martinez claimed: ''It was an horrendous tackle and McCarthy's ankle is quite damaged. I don't think he will be able to play against Brazil which is a shame because it is his first senior call up. He will meet up with the squad but, the way he is now, he looks unlikely to be able to participate.''

Ridgewell could have had three yellow cards for that tackle, one each for James, the linesman, and the corner flag.

Seriously he could have been sent off for that tackle on James.

A very good through pass from James to set up a good chance.

McCarthy met up with the squad, but didn't take part in training: http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=c...r-men&Itemid=8
Republic of Ireland Assistant manager Marco Tardelli revealed that McCarthy will be assessed again today by the medical staff, after which a better idea on his likely availability for Tuesday's game will be known.

Well that puts this issue to bed then. He's one of us now. Actually, he always was one of us!

Yep - hopefully he'll be the mainstay of the team to come

Until he plays a competitive game in the Irish shirt, he can still play for Scotland

He did good in a situation where the Brazilians were well on top.
He looks like a player that can see and make a good pass. Very promising and delighted he is playing with us.

I thought that the friendly was deemed a competitive game?

It's not deemed a competitive game, but playing in a friendly is now sufficient to tie a player to a national team. He couldn't play for Scotland now even if he wanted.

It has to be a competitive game for him to be tied, no argument.
I hope he gets good game time over the next friendlies.

They changed the language a few years back to include friendlies.

With the exception of the conditions specified in par. 3 and 4 below, any Player who has already represented one Association in a match (either in full or in part) in an official competition of any category or any type of football may not play an international match for a representative team of another Association.

What about Joe Lapira? I thought he wasn't tied to us because it was only a friendly he played in?

I think Bob Bradley will just have to accept that Joe Lapira will not be spearheading his team's assault of this summer's World Cup.

I was taking the **** with that comment really. There's no chance he'll swap, but he can still play for Scotland until he features in a Euro qualifier (or a World Cup qualifier if it really takes him that long to make his competitive debut).

I'm not sure how it works, but I assume that any player capped under the old rules will have to remain tied. Where the hell is Lapira now anyway??

I was glad to see McCarthy get his cap. Hopefully he'll have a strong finish this season with Wigan.

Based on the above, that may not be true. He is happily tied to us it seems (happily as both sides want this, I'm delighted for the lad).

Nah, who put that 'any type of football' in there? someone has been pulling your leg Charlie
It is beyond argument now, it is participation in an official competition which binds, eg A qualifier.

It use to be this text which was ambiguous

    (a) He has not played a match
(either in full or in part) at “A”
    international level for his current
Association, and if at the time of
his first full or partial appearance
    in an international match in
    an official competition for
    his current Association, he
    already had the nationality
    of the Association’s team for
    which he wishes to play.´

It was changed to this in June 2008, the key part being the clarity to the level - official competition

    a) He has not played a match
(either in full or in part) in an
    official competition at “A”
    international level for his current
    Association, and at the time
of his fi rst full or partial
    appearance in an international
    match in an official competition
    for his current Association, he
    already had the nationality of
    the representative team for
    which he wishes to play.
