I've just scrolled through today's posts on this looking for eirebhoy's without clicking on that I won't be reading his extremely intelligent well thought out comments. Was pretty poignant. Feel free to move this.
Seen McCarthy playing for the u21s against the Swiss on Sky recently and while he didnt stand out all game he did some things like making space for himself with his first touch that made me think he is going to be a really excellent player. He wasnt flashy but certain basic things stood out at times that showed a bit of class
Its really not that complicated!!!

Any word on his injury?? I wonder will rout at Spurs help to promote him up a few places in the squad..its hard to know what direction his career is going at the moment, I am beginning to wonder was it just more media driven frenzy about this kid although I hope not it would be great to see a young Irish player breakthrough..
Is he hurt or just not picked?
No Somos muchos pero estamos locos.
Hes on the bench today for Wigan.Hopefully the hammering they got last week will make Martinez want to freshen up his team in the next few weeks and McCarthy will get his chance
Its really not that complicated!!!
Is it better to play in Scotland on Hamilton or sit on the bench for Wigan every week?
Should he have stayed in the SPL until he was a bit older?

well he hasnt even really been on the bench for Wigan up to now so its a step in the right direction for him. Personally I think he had gone as far as he could have at Hamilton and he should benefit from better coaching at Wigan, if he starts playing regularly then he will definately improve

It's hard to remember he's only 18, normally a player only starts playing regular football at 21.
If you've nothing good to say, say it.
I posted this a page ago:
He's still a boy for god's sake, far too early to call him a bust. It does show how ridiculous arguments for him to have been included in Irish squads on the back of people seeing that he got a game with Hamilton was though. He is only 18, if we was a regular in a Premier League team then he'd be one of the best players in the world, up there with the likes of Rooney and Fabregas. Instead it will probably take him until he's 20/21 to break through like most other extremely talented youngsters, and he'll go on to have a great career. He might not be a Rooney or Fabregas but he will still surely be a very good player for us in the future despite that.
He's 18/19, we don't need constant updates about him not being in the team, not making a bench, scoring for reserves. He's a bloody child. In 3/4 years time you can start worrying about his development, Frank Lampard didn't become a first team regular until he was 21, why exactly do people think McCarthy would be in a Premiership team already??
He also doesn't desperately need to go on loan to a Championship team to get game time at his age. He's coming along just fine if he's in Premier League squads aged 18 and highly rated by numerous coaches.
He won't be an issue for the Irish squad until we start worrying about qualifying for Brazil 2014. In the meantime let's worry about whether he'll melt in that heat/humidity ala Steve Staunton, rather than questioning if he'll be Wigan's lynchpin against Fabregas when they meet later this season.
Could be loaned out in January (possibly back to Scotland)
"James produces great standards on a daily basis in training, and he is not a long way away from the first team.
Though Martinez will re-evaluate in January - seems to be worried about the strength of his squad and will only loan James out if he can bring in replacements.
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?
"No, I drink to help me mind my own business....can I get you one? (c) Ronnie Drew
would prefer if his loan deal was to the championship rather than scotland.....Just so he is in a different league rather than the comfort zone of the SPL
Bring back the plank
