was speaking to a lad i know today who is involved with a team in america playing to a similar standard to premier/1a in limerick.he told me there is a rule in the league that a team gets deducted points for every 3 players that they get sent off throughout a season.think its 3 points every time 3 players get a red card for violent conduct etc.
think this would be a very good rule to bring into the junior leagues in town.over the last few seasons there seems to be alot of lads getting sent off for fighting with other players and referees.(e.g wembley v pike game this season)
it might put a stop to half the rubbish that goes on every week and might make teams just get on with the football.
What does everybody think?can any of ye see a rule like this working?I think it would.
Personally i don't think any rule brought in will make a difference, its the players own responsibility to control his or her emotions.
There is line between frustration and Plain Abuse and sorry but some players don't know how to stop themselves crossing that line.
People mention the rugby secenario how they get respect.. well having the 10 yard rule and reversing penalties make a huge difference in rugby, So players have to be more disciplined but not sure it would have the same effect in soccer unless you can give actual penalties(which would never happen).
Lets call a spade a spade, its a thankless job being a ref.
Ask any limerick soccer player and the response would be
"Jesus i wouldn't do it"
it all boils down to Respect.
So how do we all(meaning everybody not just referees) earn respect?
Well said Ref, the sooner players give more respect the better!
I think the book should be thrown at Wembley to make an example of them. They have been trying to bully ref's for years, the amount of s**t they give officials is a joke. If ref's are consistent in their card giving for dissent etc. maybe players would wake up and respect the man in the middle!
I know this is a little off the point now with regard discipline towards players for abusing refs etc... I totally agree that some players can take it too far protesting and the refs should be protected a lil more...
However can anyone please tell me if refs are allowed to curse at a player such as "Shut your f***ing mouth?" When the player made a half decent challenge, ref blew the whistle for a free and the penalised player asked why they were penalised that was the ref's response!!
Again i am not anti-refs.....just wondering is it acceptable?
not the mls oscar,a junior league around boston areais what it was similar to premier/1a as i said in the post.id agree with you regarding the bigger fines and longer bans.it was just a proposal i put out there to see what the general thought would be on the subject.i do admit i cudnt see the council bring a rule in like that, afterall they cant even organise the fixtures!
It seems to be the overall view from everyone that the following changes should be made.
1) Change of fixture set up
2) Change of kick off times (ie 1pm/1.30pm etc on Sunday's, to ensure more supporters at games)
3) Change in attitude both from refs and players.
IMO,
Re: 1) All teams should receive 2 sets of fixtures (1st set with games to be played up to xmas and 2nd set with games to be palyed from Jan 1st to the last day of the season), and unless there is a death in either club or your opponent is involved in a cup competetion, then your game will go ahead on that date..............(With no game to be called off due to Oscar Traynor being played unless you have a minimum of 2 players involve in the OT)
Re: 2) All Prem & Div 1A games should kick off at 1.30pm every Sunday (finishing at 3.15/3.30 latest, and still on time to watch any footy on at 4pm on the box)..this will ensure much better support for all clubs (in fairness who would want to get out of bed on one of their days off to watch a game at 10.30 on a Sunday morning).............teams outside the top 2 ldivsions could then play their Sunday games at 10.30 (finishing at 12.15/12.30 latest, with plenty of time to go watch any of the other 2 top division teams play)...............Refs could also ref 2 games a day as they have been doing anyway.
Re : 3) Any player that receives 3 yellow cards, automatically misses the next game.....full stop................this would stop players giving back chat to refs.
These are just suggestions, and I know some of the players involved outside the top 2 divisions will slate me, but at the end of the day, the teams in the top 2 divsions in Limerick are their for a reason.

I would agree with your suggestions.
Also i would have an automatic one match ban for a red. If the same player gets another red 2 game ban next time. 3 reds = 3 game ban for the third red and so on...
Could do something similar with the yellows.
3 yellows = 1 game
6 yellows = 2 games
Abbeyvale,
I totally concur with your foresight but you cannot plan fixtures over an entire season. The first round of league fixtures are not a problem but its when you get into the second round you have deviations due to cup fixtures, FAI, MJC, cancellations etc, its not as atraight forward as many believe. However there is no way a situation such as the farce that is the end of this season in Limerick should have occured, thatis unforgiveable and an insult to our league. More young people should consider taking up administrative roles in Limerick football, there is a preception that it is for older people. Their time has come and gone and its time to move aside in order for football in Limerick to move forward.
