Is an iMic too low-tech for you?

Techies, the sound card in my Mac G4 Powerbook was killed by my logic board, leaving me with a computer with no audio in or out. If I want to get it repaired propperly its going to cost €750 to replace the logic board (the real problem) and the sound card. This aint going to happen!
Im wondering if I buy an external sound card, connected through the firewire or USB, will this get around the problem of the logic board. The guy at the repair shop seemed to think this was worth a go but they didnt have any in the shop and as Im living in france at the mo, the conversation was fairly limited. He recomended a Mbox 2 from M-audio which is prob a bit too hi spec for me, I just want headphones out and mic in so I can use Skype & watch DVDs. This Hercules Muse Pocket LT seems perfect for what I want, but Im not sure if it can be selected as a stand alone soundcard in the absence of my origional one. My friend uses TASCAM US-122 L to plug his guitar in to his mac and it looks good to me as occasionally Id like to plug my guitar in too, but its a bit pricey too & the guitar isn't really that important for me.
Any thoughts? Not having Skype is a totall balls for me
As I say, we're just young & a bit nieve.

I think it is, but this is what I want to find out!
As far as I can tell, thats just an adapter for jacks that are too big for the normal sockets on a pc, so it uses the existing sound card, which is broked for me
