I'm thinking of staying on for the week in Denmark and maybe making my way across to Sweden before coming back after the Ireland game in August. Any recommendations?

i was in gothenburg, have to say the women that we saw were savage, but they were few and far between, its a very male populated city....at least 3 to 1, maybe more!!! but a nice city all the same very relaxed. dont know anywhere else in sweden though, have to say i have been told stockhom is far less friendly, and not a great deal more to see, so 2/3 days is time enough....

I live in Malmö and I can safely say that there's not much to see, 20 mins is enough to see everything Malmö has to offer.

Best to keep to the cities as the Swedish countryside can be quite "conservative". Also watering holes are predominately a city-thing here in Sweden and off-licences are state controlled and hard to find (when open).

I like Copenhagen but it's expensive and the people there can be quite chilly. The Danish countryside is pretty much the same as the Swedish. Some nice villages and towns but not much to do there.

I've only been in Gothenburg once but it's a nice, compact city with a good night life. Worth a visit but avoid the Irish pubs.

I'm in Stockholm quite a bit and it's expensive but not as bad as Copenhagen. There's plenty to see in Stockholm but it might be a bit far for you to travel up to.

My only experience of Sweden was in the mountains around Funesdalen and we were mainly out in the wilderness with dog sleds so not much help their. However Copenhagen is a lovely city. Had a nice 5 days there back in 2000 even though it was constantly raining. Of course it depends what you're into but if you like museums, Copenhagen has one for almost everything you could think of. Drinking in pubs is expensive as is eating out but beer in the supermarkets is cheap. We took a nice train trip out to Roskilde when we were there. You can get a Copenhagen card for a set price which gives you admission to all museums and sights (including Roskilde and a couple of other villages) and you can use it on public transport.

Only spent 1 day in Copenhagen and it lashed rain.
Seemed expensive but worth seeing during the Summer.
I didnt get to do that much cos I was only there for a
few hours and it was lashing rain.

Spent 6 weeks in Karlskrona in Sweden. Nice place but
fairly quiet and you'll see everything there is to see in a day.

BP has some good tips and just following up on the museums the Guinness Book of Records, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, The Carlsberg Museum and The Erotica Museum are probably the most popular. Very easy to get around in both Denmark and Sweden as the public transport is both excellent and punctual so you don't necessarily need a car but it is obviously preferable.

The area between Copenhagen and Helsingör to the north is known locally as the whiskey-belt as it's an upper-class area. Some really well kept villages and towns in this region and well worth a drive through. Helsingör was the setting for Shakesphere's Hamlet and the castle there might be worth a look at. Helsingör is itself quite a grey city and full of Swedes buying booze so other than the castle there's not much here. Helsingborg is a 20 mins journey with the ferry from here and is, in my opinion, a much nicer city than Helsingör.

On the Swedish side, Skåne region, the cities Malmö (for 20 mins), Lund and Helsingborg are worth a visit as are the coastal areas to the south of Malmö and north of Helsingborg. Stay well away from Trelleborg, Staffanstorp, Eslöv, Höör, Hässleholm and Landskrona. Never been in Karlskrona as it's a bit of a journey away from civilisation .

Was in Malmo a few years ago for football but it was Mid-summer holiday so also nothing open.

The train to Copenhagen is excellent & runs 24/7 even hourly through the night.

Copenhagen seemed lively but was more expensive than Sweden but maybe thats just because bigger city.

I wouldn't let Malmo and Karlskrona turn you off Sweden!

Malmo is a small city (bit like Cork ) and theres not much going on if your going with a gang to get drunk!, it's not that kind of city but is still a lovely place to spend a day or two if your not after drink and women!

Likewise Karlskrona is a decent enough spot for about a day!! That is smaller again than Malmo and very much the countryside but they do have a decent museum to waste a few hours.

Stockholm on the other hand is class!!
Lived there for a short period and would love to get back soon. It's got everything you want and I've never found it to be anything but friendly. 2 or 3 days to see everything??? That’s just complete crap. You could spend nearly a week in Stockholm between nights out and sightseeing and not see everything. Even just to take a walk around the various islands or travel along the Tbana can lead you to plenty of new places.

It gets the thumbs up from me!

I agree with higgins - I spent 3 nights in Stockholm and it wasn't nearly enough. A great city that I can't wait to go back to!

Just to throw a spanner in the works... I was in Gothenburg for a week in 1998 and had a great time.

In 2003, I was in Stockholm and was bored after 2 days.

Had a fantastic 5 days in Goteborg last year.

Lovely city, friendly people, marginally more expensive than Dublin and reasonable nightlife.

Enough to keep you occupied for 2-3 days.

I'd recommend Göteborg too. Had a class stay there.
Stay in the Ibis Boatel (a boat that's a hotel!). The women are unbelievealbe. They'll make you realise what an ugly race we truly are.

Indeed. But they love the Paddies, warts and all - all puns intended. One mate of mine reckons that when certain foreign girls (Swedes included) hear his thick west of Ireland accent, it lubricates the fastener on their bra straps.

I've passed through Odense a couple of times but never stopped to have a decent look around the place. It'd appear to be of similar size to Limerick.
