    Goalkeepers going up for corners.

Why does the keeper always run into the opposition team's area in these last-minute situations of there is a corner or a free-kick?

Obviously I understand the value of having as many players in there as possible, but why the keeper?

Usually there is one defender left on the half-way line anyway. Seems to me it would be more sensible for a defender (more experienced with heading the ball) to go up, and the keeper stay on the halfway line, able to put the ball back into the area if the opportunity arises, but also closer to his own area if something goes wrong.

Or is there some reason I'm not seeing?

Because the keeper's usually 6 ft+ and no-one's assigned to mark him? Also, if you watch carefully, the back-marker is usually a short full-back or midfielder.

Roy of the rovers stuff !! was nt there a keeper that came up like that a few years back scored kept the team from getting relegated .

But ive allways wondered that myself i guess he may be slightly better at judging crosses than the guy they leave back seemed a strange one allright .

I suppose it just causes a bit of confusion for the opposition and gives the fans a bit of a boost

Peter Schmeichel got one against Rotor Volograd in the UEFA Cup about 10 years ago, but they still went out.

AFAIK, Schmeichel scored 11 career goals.

Of course the really good keepers can score from long range.

That was such a jammy goal from Robinson.

But it is great to see a keeper score. Does anyone remember the name of that Paraguayan goalie who took free kicks and scored them regularly?

    It causes confusion.

Peter Schemecial was a good keeper goign forward, although in his youth he was a striker.

He didn't really - it was going straight into the keeper's hands when it took a deflection to the other side of the net.

Mart Poom scored recently too. And of course there's José Luis Chilavert and Jorge Campos.

Edit - sorry, Chilavert already mentioned. Peter Shilton scored back in '68 or so. And I remember the Shels keeper scoring in a 6-4 win in Monaghan a few years back. Darren Quigley nearly scored a diving header in injury time in our 3-2 defeat in Drogheda earlier this year - don't think football could have gotten any better than that!

There's also this - check out the last one!

My favourite goalkeeper goal (although it was disallowed for a dodgy offisde (iirc)) was a Schmeichael bicycle kick against Wimbledon in the cup around 10 years ago. Can't find footage of it though.
