Finally got a win! Bohs were slightly better but not enough to say they deserved to win. Kenna was superb as usual, Quigley made a few good saves. Fitzgerald seemed to be lacking sharpness after coming back from injury- I thought it was a bad decision to move Conan upfront to accomodate him, who was poor upfront.
Also Heary was class for Bohs.

Ah well, it gave us a brief moment of amusement after the result. Pretty much agree with Dman's assesment of the game. We dominated possesion but did SFA with it. Apart from the close calls from O and T Heary we had nothing. Stupid penalty to give away.
In the post match interview Mahon said we should have won it though.

I have no problem with the individual players but King and Crowley is not a central midfield combination that's going to hold well against bigger teams. It seems Crowley is injured now anyway.
Solid performance by the defence again. Mansaram is the black Conor Sammon, can't win a header to save his life in spite of his height. Crowe was pretty ineffective too.
Sammo's penalty was well taken, whatever is said about him that's one thing he does well. I think his ear cupping celebration was dedicated to Angus' e-criticism.Not the greatest of victories but hopefully it can help us turn a corner. It would do us a great deal of luck if Shane McFaul would get fit soon again too.
Students back on track
UCD recorded their first win in four league games as they overcame Bohemians at Belfield Park tonight. Although Bohs had the majority of possession and chances they gave away a penalty at the death which proved decisive.
After last week's dreadful performance against Longford Town Pete Mahon made four changes to the starting line up. There was a new central-midfield partnership as Tony McDonnell and Ronan Finn were replaced by Paul Crowley and Brian King respectively, Patrick McWalter was given the nod ahead of Derek Doyle for his first league game in 10 months after recovering from a cruciate ligament injury and Darren Forsyth made way for Shane Fitzgerald, with Conan Byrne moving upfront to accomodate him on the right wing.
Bohemians had the first opportunity of the game after 20 minutes. Darren Mansaram received the ball 40 yards from goal and went on a surging run through the UCD defence. However he dragged his left-footed effort well wide of the goal when bearing down on goal.
Bohs again gave the home side a scare shortly afterwards. A loose ball fell to Glen Crowe who attempted to lob Darren Quigley from 30 yards but his effort was just over, with Quigley motionless five yards off his line.
UCD registered their first shot on target after 34 minutes. A good ball from Brian King set Shane Fitzgerald free on the right. His cross was well controlled by Conor Sammon but his shot on the turn was saved by Brian Murphy.
Bohemians came out in the second half with more attacking intent and carved out many openings. John-Paul Kelly almost opened the scoring but his shot was blocked by Quigley's feet.
The visitors continued to pressurise the UCD defence and hit the woodwork on two separate occasions. After 60 minutes Owen Heary latched onto Thomas Heary's through ball. His well struck shot was tipped onto the bar by Quigley.
10 minutes later Thomas Heary hit the post. The UCD failed to clear a Mark Rossiter free kick and the ball fell to Heary 25 yards out but his shot was narrowly off target.
UCD began to come into the game and almost took the lead against the run of play. Tony McDonnell broke down the right and sent a high cross into the area. Derek Doyle rose highest but Brian Murphy was at full stretch to keep his side in the game.
However there was not much he could do about the winning goal deep into injury time. Brian King's through ball found Fitzgerald and he cut inside. Dessie Byrne brought him down in the box and referee Anthony Buttimer had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Conor Sammon stepped up to cooly slot home his third league goal of the season give UCD their first home win in the eircom League since April 12.
UCD: Quigley; Mahon, Kenna, McNally, Bermingham; Fitzgerald (Purcell '84), King, Crowley (McDonnell '75), McWalter (Doyle '70); C. Byrne, Sammon.
Subs not used: Gregg, Finn.

Yeah. Bit harsh seeing as he one of the players who didn't do poor in Longford. For the most part he was looking at the ball go over his head too.
Not sure if Sammo reads this forum but if in any way, we contriobuted to his improved performance the other night, then kudos all around. Just look at the goal on the youtuble clip attached here - he goes up for the fiorst ball, doesn't win it but makes it difficult for the defender allowing our midfielder to get a touch, takes the second ball from Conan, holds off the defender and plays a lay off to King - stuff that Sammo can do in his sleep but where he struggled last week.Sammo's penalty was well taken, whatever is said about him that's one thing he does well. Vastly improved performance from Sammo and the team overall - stand outs were Kenna, McNally and King.
Clearly we were very lucky with the 2 off the woodwork but if this in any way represents fate paying us back for Sligo away and Drogs at home then c'est la vie.

So you think we need 38 points to survive, which would normally leave us comfortably mid table, apart from the seasons when you had teams finishing the season in single figures? You need to take a reality check.

No team has ever gone down with ten wins; Dundalk are the only ones to have gone down with nine wins, and even then that was because three went down as the league reduced in size. Harps hold the record for most points ever in second last in a 33-game season, with 36 the year we were in the play off last. Waterford, Longford and Galway will be doing well to get 30 points, let alone two of the three getting 38.

Yes. No team has ever gone down with 10 wins. We got 9 wins last year and finsished 6th, 2 points off 5th. Also Waterford, Galway and Longford are very poor and I'll be surprised if they are within 7/8 points of us at the end of the season.You think we can stay up with less than 10 wins? name your safety margin then... spit it out
