I would have to go with 4-5-1
after all it has served us well in the past and it can be turned into an attacking formation very easily
4-4-2
4-5-1
5-3-2
3-5-2
total football
After some recent experimentaion on the pitch and, with a seemingly large and versatile squad at his disposal, which formation would you like to see Liam Murphy deploy this season?
I would have to go with 4-5-1
after all it has served us well in the past and it can be turned into an attacking formation very easily
I doubt if 4-5-1 could ever really take over from 4-4-2, or could it?
4-4-2 is the only formation. FULL STOP.
I don't care what formation we play as long as it doesn't include Daly, Caulfield or Hartigan.
Ideally...
Devine
Carey Napier O'Rourke Horgan
O'Brien O'Grady Flanagan Cahill
Mulligan O'Flynn
that would be our best team alright Neil. except for the omission of Coughlan. but who would we drop to replace him?? a tough one
Anyone notice this is thread number 666? Coincadink or karma?
I'd drop the wingers. If global warming continues at this rate and Bush fails to sign up to Kyoto agreement, sea-levels should rise considerately, leading to flooding of vast sections of Cork including Turners Cross. First to drown will be wingbacks and wingers, therefore I believe we should play 1-3-3-3, Daly being the sweeper with Mulligan, O'Flynn and Hartigan up front. Ollie should be asked to construct a large ark by God, in which he should place two of each type of animal on the earth to ensure the survival of the human race.
Hope your listening, Grunter.
I can't see how the Ark will help us win matches but hey you never know.....However I doubt Ollie would be able to surpass Noahs fine work!
Been a traditional 4-4-2 with wingers person its hard for me to change. However we just don't seem to have the midfielders especially on the right for this. Ricos City team at Bishopstown & Davie Barrys at the cross were the best examples of this!
3-5-2 seems attractive but we all know it'll usually be 5 at the back. Since Horgan & carey are possibly our best players they may see more of the ball as wingbacks. Also when i've seen the 3 in midfield experiment this year Ollie say a lot of the ball in the middle of the pitch. An extra man @ the back may protect us from Deccis & Dereks lack of pace?
Its refreshing to see Gunther use meaningless pre-sesaon friendlies against the likes of Cobh to test these thiings out though.
Twas entertaining at least the other night. O'Flynn and mullers work well together.I'd say 5-3-2 would work well,
Devine
Carey Coughlan O'Rourke Napier Hoggie
OGrady Kelvin Ollie
Mullers O'Flynn
That would solve the right side of midfield prob too, however i fear Guther will revert to 4-4-2
Oh no not them again
If the Old Skool...
Mooney
O'Brien Daly Coughlan Napier
Caulfield Flanagan Freyne Cahill
Morley Hartigan
played the New Skool...
Devine
Carey O'Rourke Horgan
Tynan O'Grady Herrick Bennet
O'Flynn Mulligan Welch
who would win?
That's the next game I want to see in Scoil Stiofan N'uefa.
I'd go with this if I was Murph who, incidentally, I'm not...
I think the key to improving City is speed. If O'Rourke's speed is used to cover any combination of Napier, Daly & Coughlan then both Carey and Hoggie can be released as support to the midfield + frontmen as extra wide players. With O'Grady looking a keen competitor in the engine room and Ollie back to form we may have sufficient movement in that area to supply Mulligan and O'Flynn/Morley/Caulfield, and up the scoring rate from last season. I haven't seen O'Flynn yet, and he has to prove himself in competitive action. Don't write Morley and Caulfield off too soon. They may be in the twilight of their careers but I reckon they still have plenty to offer, though perhaps more as squaddies than starters...
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Murph gets them running and if we'll be playing or hoofing. I think there's plenty of football in this squad, so hopefully the fare at the X will be a lot more attractive this season. There are reasons to be cheerful...
Gerry
4 4 2 with specific instructions of getting forward quickly at every opportunity...attacking, passing, fast ground-based, no hoofing it football....
Well I can dream can't I?
of course the christmas tree formation will be held in reserve![]()
