Well guys not been able to watch it only odd bits on youtube. is this any good? it just doesn't sound right with the irish accent.
i love Dragon's Den UK i think its an excellent show. does the irish version match up

Irish version is...okay i guess. I've watched it the 2 weeks so far and have it set to record this week too. SO they're must be something i enjoy about it!
The Irish one will clearly suffer in comparison with the UK versionb as money involved is much smaller. Only watched bits of the UK one as it gets boring after a while. The sums involved in the Irish one to date have been very small.
if you watched the early episodes of Dragon's Den UK, the money was very small then too. its only in the last year that it started clearing $150,000 etc.Originally Posted by pete
it does get boring with the pitches especially when they show one deal per programme. it is hilarious though when people come in and pitch the most ridiculous ideas and then leave in a huff after fighting to the end for money
I did a show they did with clips from International versions - best one was Nigeria where the Dragons had ask about a curious section of fellas budget - under examination he explain it was basically bribes to get contracts.
The Limerick boys on the Irish version with the till that cleaned and sanitised the money inside using UV light were the best craic so far I thought. They were ripped to pieces on cross-examination when the Dragons asked them how the underside of the money was to be cleaned etc. They then said that scientific studies proved that it worked, but surprise, surprise they had no references for any such studies. It seemed their idea basically relied on using "The Force"!!

Was ready to jump on this like so many RTE remakes, but credit where it's due, it's really quite good.
The dragons seem well chosen, the presenter is unobtrusive, and thinking about it there a few days ago, the set-up is probably more suited to Ireland than anywhere.
Having some small experience in the area, it seems to be a country where no-marks regularly come up with hare-brained schemes to screw money out of retailers (on the promise of increasing sales/profitability/ease of operation or whatever) and then get the right hump when they don't jump at them.
Money-cleaning tills!

Seen some of last week & it seems anything to do with construction is automatically rejected. Not a very far sighted viewpoint as could take a couple of years to develop a good invention.
I saw an episode of it the other night and thought the same thing Pete. I don't like this show or it's ilk (never seen the UK one) as it's basically like any of the pop idols, next top models and what have you -which is basically so called experts making little of people for viewers amusement.
The two lads with the curtain tidy had a good idea and their heat recirculator was even better (I think that might already exist mind). The judges mindset that no-one would like to wrinkle their expensive drapes with a gadget like the curtain tidy shows a level of disconnect that renders them incompetent for purposes of adjudication.
Most Joe Soaps don't have expensive drapes. If they're lucky they have expensive-looking drapes they picked up in a Home Focus sale and they don't expect to get more than three years out of them as the feckin things will sun bleach and get mildew on the lining. Offered a 30-40% saving in heating bills for a layout of under a tonne to kit out a house with those yokes enough people will go with it to make it an entirely viable venture.
Similarly with the heat recirculators -in a time when the property market has collapsed and people are staying put because they can't move on -they make the best of the property they have. That heat capture gizmo is exactly the kind of added value project people doing up their home would go for ...assuming it works.

It's not quite like that Lionel, there's no adjudication in the sense you suggest there. It's not meant to be Ireland's Next Top Inventor.
There may be an element of belittling the little people, but by no means always, and even then only when the people involved make it easy for them to do it - poor concept, poor grasp of the numbers, poor ideas about markets etc...
At the end of the day it's their own money they're investing, they're not obliged to spend any of it, no matter how good the idea looks. Even if the ideas presented are sound, any potential deal can still fall through on the numbers, and that's part of the appeal. It's all about the return, and if the investors can't get a big enough chunk (in their mind) to justify the risk then they won't invest in an idea no matter how worthy it is.
On the UK Dragon's Den that has happened many times, in fact they've done a couple of follow-up shows featuring some businesses that didn't get picked up that are since doing really well, as well as some deals that subsequently fell through for whatever reason (patents not holding up and so on).
However, it's only a TV show and I'm not getting paid to be an apologist for it so I'll stop now.
