Napoli... anyone been to a match?

Just wondering if anyone's been to a match in Naples? Looks like we might be off to the Amalfi coast on hols, and being in Italy, will have to take in a match or two.

No, on my list definitely.
I can't wait to get hold of the new jersey.
I'd imagine tickets to their Serie A matches will be very scarce, at least for the first few weeks of the season.

I've been there-Great stadium and great support. It's easy to get to from the Amalfi coast. They might sell out now that they are Serie A but I don't think tickets will be too hard to come by. I would try their website as a first point of call. I stayed in a hotel in Napoli and the guy at reception organised me a couple of tickets- no problems.

On another note, napoli is a great town to explore if you have a day to spare. And Pompeii too of course.

Been to a few Serie A games and never had an issue getting a ticket. You can buy them at the ground. They are cheaper than PL tickets but you need your passport when buying and entering the ground.

True but never was asked for passport. Also dont think its a good idea to go to Naples now:

They'll probably be using the stadium as a dump before too long. Which is what the whole city has always been. Don't give me any of this "gritty charm" guff, its just a complete kip.

Been there albeit quite a while back. Should be no problem with tickets. Best to go to the ground a day or 2 before or else early on match day.

My brother lives in Rome and one day he went down to Napoli to see what the fuss was. He claims it was the most nervous he's ever been, even more so then when he went to Johannesburg.

I'd love to go see a game at the San Paolo. It always struck as one of the best atmospheres in Serie A.

I think napolis reputation is worse than reality. I liked its "gritty charm" and the locals were pleasant and friendly. Good gelato too...

Some good pizza too. A good bit rougher (in every sense of the word) outside of the centre - litter everywhere too.

If you can, try and see Napoli v Roma, it's one of the big matches there, the derby del sole. Don't think tickets will be a problem, iirc no matches last season in Italy were sold out, not even the Rome derbies.

If anyone has any strings they can pull to get me a couple of tickets for Napoli-Cagliari on Aug26 I'd be eternally grateful. They don't do them online and all other attempts have drawn a blank so far.

Well we rolled up on the day of the Cagliari match, but no mission getting tickets for that one. Sold out and the only tickets I could find on the black market looked photocopied so I passed up on the opportunity. As luck would have it Napoli were home to Livorno on the Wednesday in Coppa Italia. The cup is nothing in Italy, barely the equivalent of the League Cup in Ireland/England, but it was an opportunity to get to the San Paolo.

Getting tickets was the first problem.... since the trouble in Sicily last season the authorities have really cracked down and you need to produce id to buy tickets and to enter the stadium. Lucky enough we had one passport between the 2 of us, and managed to buy 2 tickets on that. 15euro for the pitchside stand, it was a tenner for the Curva, and there was a 5 euro reduction if you bought 24 hours in advance!

Anyway, despite being the Coppa there was a crowd of about 35,000. Amazing experience, great atmosphere, though it is a bit of an intimidating place- when we came out of the Metro station pre match there was a group of 100 odd Ultras armed with iron bars making their way to the ground. There must have been a thousand bottles thrown onto the pitch/running track during the game. The ground is a little run down, but its grand, and is fairly intimate despite the running track.

As I say, a little intimidating but well worth the effort and highly recommended. The city itself is a bit rough around the edges, but is a fascinating place, picturesque in places, and interesting.

Bottle throwing is a tradition in Italy.
