    New tournament?

    Posted on behalf of Shelsman:

The Australian FA recently suggested a regular/yearly tournament in London between Australia, England, Ireland and Scotland, would you like to see this come about?

it could be a good idea but could you thrust the english fans to behave if they riot at friendlies inagine what they will do if there is silverware
soccer isn't a matter of life or death its more important than that!!!

    There's better ideas around.

I'd prefer the All-Britain and irelands idea.

    Just my preference.

What about Norn Iron and Wales?
Would England be good enough for this tournament??

I don't think Ireland would gain anything from playing average teams like Scotland, England and Australia. We'd be brought down to their level.

I'd prefer games against Brazil, France, Italy etc.

How long did the old 'Home Nations' thing go on for?

Home Nations went on for 100 years or so until 1984. The North won then, so presumably it wasn't being taken too seriously any more!

Wouldn't be too bad, but it would get repetitive I suppose, and give less exposure to other footballing cultures. How many times do you see friendlies arranged because the opponents play like someonw you're playing soon?

It's a great idea for the Aussies because thay need the games. But a stupid idea for the others because they are already too many games and it would just become a series of meaningless friendlies. And everyone hates meaningless friendlies. now an U-18/U-20 tournament would be a better idea.

I'd have to agree with RaM here. Players in England already have enough on their plate every season. The Aussies would definitely be the only beneficiaries of such a tournament. Friendlies only have value when you have young players pushing for a 1st team spot, but then again, how many people will pay to watch games NOT involving the top players??

I'd love to see Ireland thrash England every year! It would also give us a chance to take a look at some fringe players.

We would ya know. We're way better than any of them.
    In fact at the moment it'd probably finish;
    1. Ireland
    2. Wales
    3.England
    4.Scotland
    5. North

Wales is going to finish ahead of England?

God man, be realistic will ya... you might dislike England, but lets face it, they'd probably win the whole bloody thing 9 times out of10.

    False.
    England are hype.
    Wales are class(the top kind).
Have a look at the Euro Qualifying tables, "The Legend(take your head out of your ass and stick your opinions up there)"

    P.s.Ignore Irelands group.

P.p.s. You did nothing to deserve that abuse.

    P.p.p.s. Sorry.

It might be interesting though if it was made up of teams from
    eircom League
    League of Wales
    SPL
    Nationwide league
    Irish League
    and the aussies.

At least that way, guys from the likes of teams like Kidderminster, Boston Utd and other crap levels would not be representing Ireland...

Close enough. The correct answer is 1987, 2-0 in a friendly played at Wembley. That said we didn't have to wait long to get our revenge, by winning a game that REALLY mattered.
Good point about Wales, they are a class outfit at the moment. Should even make it to Portugal.

England aren't necessarily a worse team than Ireland at the moment, and historically they haven't been either. It's just that an Irish team will ALWAYS raise their game against England. How else would you explain our superb record against them?

Reckon England aren't necessarily stronger all over the pitch.
They've a good bunch of young keepers but i'd pick Given over Seaman anyday(last nights worst goal ever was Titus Brambles fault).
Forget bout Harte but Ashley Cole isn't the business.
    Danny Mills?

    Good luck.
England would kill for Damien Duff.
They're lightweight in the centre, minus Scholes.
And a similar situation up front.
On another note, i don't reckon Sven is all hes blown up to be.

You're right in saying England would kill for Damien Duff, but, so would every other international team on the planet. Quite simply, when it comes to left-wingers Duff is the be all and end all of today.
I disagree that England are lightweight up front. I actually feel they have a wealth of talent at their disposal. Any team that could have called on the likes of Shearer, Owen, Jeffers, and now James Beattie, is hardly lightweight.
Sven IS overrated. On the other hand, the England job is the toughest job in international soccer due to the lack of ANY 'honeymoon period' WHATSOEVER, plus their unbelieveably demanding 'fans'.

    Shearer?

Jeffers ain't exactly shiit hot, contrary to the hype.

I agree about no honeymoon period but surely you agree that Sven is getting more than a fair crack of the whip?
