Monaghan United make the longest of their FAI eircom League of Ireland journeys this Saturday when they travel to the deep south to play Cobh Ramblers in St. Colman’s Park. United will be on a high from last Friday’s 4-0 thumping of Shelbourne and their having collected a point away to Athlone on Tuesday, but they will still have goalkeeping worries. Darren McQuaid will be out for another few weeks and while Alvin Rouse’s condition is improving, he will not be match fit either. This means that goalkeeping duties will fall to new temporary signing Danny Woods once more.
Peter D’Arcy is also doubtful as he tries to shake off a groin injury while Captain Barry Burke and Kevin Williamson are both suspended for the game.
Cobh had a good weekend themselves last weekend when they beat table toppers Dundalk 1-0 in the dying minutes of the game, breaking the Louth team’s unbeaten run since the season began. This was a fortunate turnaround for Cobh as, despite sitting in 2nd place in the league, they were knocked out of the cup by non-league side Douglas Hall in an embarrassing 4-1 defeat. Stephen Henderson’s men dusted themselves off and got on with the League competition in fine style however against Dundalk but only managed a 2-2 draw against Shelbourne in the midweek fixture. They will undoubtedly be a hard team for United to break down.
When Cobh came to Kingspan Century Park back in April they managed a last gasp goal in what looked destined to be a 1-1 draw, to secure a 1-2 win. Mick Cooke’s team will be hoping to avenge this defeat and if they do, this will be a great boost for the team as they move up the table.
Monaghan United’s Mick Cooke is very excited about the prospect of continuing the move up the table “We are in a great position now where we are starting to make the move up the table.” He said “the team are really up for the challenge and having been working very hard in the last few weeks. Our superb performances against Derry City in the Cup and Shelbourne in the league have brought the belief back to the team and they are raring to go”
“Stephen Henderson has done wonders at Cobh this season and they are closing in on Dundalk. When they played us earlier this season, we were not fully prepared for the resilience of his squad right down to the dying seconds, but now we know what we are facing, I am confident we can give them a good game”
Kick off in Cobh is at 3pm in St. Colman’s Park.
