    Help: Outlook Express stopped working

Internet connection is fine and I can access e-mail if i go to eircoms site for my eircom.net addresses.

Have done a virus scan and it found nothing.

any ideas how to get Outlook Express working again?

What do you mean by stopped working? (Stupid question, I know, but you see what I'm getting at.) If it just won't retrieve your mail from a particular address it could be because the mail server is down (or has been changed) or they've withdrawn POP3 access.

Sometimes it refuses to appear if one session closed irregularly and you've since begun another. Go into Task Manager and look for all instances of msimn.exe in the process tab and click "End Process" for each until it either appears or there are none running (at which point you should be able to start a new one, bearing in mind that any work in progress will naturally be lost.)

Not a stupid question at all. Nothing worse than getting "it's not working" on the phone or in an email when you're doing tech support.

apologies gents -should've divulged more detail. Outlook has stopped recieving or sending e-mail. It times out after a minute or two and that is that basically.

I followed Sheridans instructions relating to the msimn.exe in the task manager last night and it got it back up and running briefly ...albeit slowly.

We were able to retrieve a couple of e-mails from herselfs "identity" and then after several attempts we were able to retrieve a few from mine.

But it's not responding to that tactic at all now. It just times out no matter what process' are shut down -error message reads A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'mail1.eircom.net', Server: 'mail1.eircom.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

Tried all those John. No joy.

I also uploaded the same profiles into Outlook on a different PC and the same thing has happened. So it doesn't appear to be a virus on one machine and seems more likely to be something to do with one of the actual e-mail addresses -to my mind anyway. Maybe a huge file or something. But I've gone into all of the addresses on eircom.net webmail and they're saying there's nothing unusual with any of my e-mails. No large files in sight.

I am no techie, but have had this problem previously. You may have already done so, but you might try this:

Try increase the server timeout option. To do this:

    a) Goto Outlook Express/Outlook,Click Tools and the Accounts.
    b) Click the Mail Tab and select your email address and click Properties.
    c) Click Advanced and drag the slider just under Server Timeouts towards Long.
    d) Click Apply and OK and exit and reopen outlook express.

    Thanks for this SH.

Okay ...we are getting somewhere. Stretched the server timeouts as far as they'd go (5mins) and it allowed e-mail into my account. I have half a dozen e-mail addresses btw. Anyway -it got the e-mails in. All small stuff, junk mail mostly.

BUT it is painfully slow to connect and retrieve what are, as I said, tiny e-mails. Anyone any ideas why this might be? I'm concerned an e-mail address or addresses might be compromised for mass mailing or something.
