New Sports Minister - implications for Shamrock Rovers

John O'Donoghue has just been elected Ceann Comhairle. So there'll be a new Minister for Sport.

Will the new incumbent provide the same backing for Shamrock Rovers getting into Tallaght as JOD did? This appointment could be as important for Shamrock Rovers as any judicial review.

Are the PD's in aswell? If so, hope it'll be Harney.

Harney and Sport? Nothing in it for big business.

Sport seems to be a prime job these days as million of grants to disperse. Maybe martin Cullen will get it.

The Taoiseach has said that a new Fianna Fáil face will be appointed to a senior position when he appoints his cabinet later this evening.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio on his way back to the Dáil from Áras an Uachtaráin, Mr Ahern said his deputy leader, Brian Cowen, will be the new Tánaiste.

Mr Ahern also said there will not be movements amongst ministers who have been in position for just for two and a half years, but they may be changed in mid-term.

initial impression is good. he is a TD from near enough the area, knows the score on the issue and was pro rovers when yours truely was canvassed by him. has no ties to any Gah club and sure as hell wont be bullied by jumped up little hitlers like Kennedy.

I would say Brennan would be good for Rovers. He likes to stand up to stronger organisations and rarely back down, unless Bertie makes him. I see him keeping the same stance as the previous man.

This is another ministerial post to add to his collection. He has certainly held some of these over the years. Personally I thought he would be appointed Ceann Comhairle. No doubt he will be a safe pair of hands but can't see him setting the sports world alight. Sounds like a sideways move at best.

Assume he is a sports fan as he has been seen at various major sporting events. I seem to remember reading that he played soccer in his student days for university, UCG?

Sport isn't even the biggest bit of that job. Tourism is by far the biggest area. Even the Arts side could rival Sports for money to spend...

TD have shown how to destroy GAA in a sprawling urban area, seriously narrowminded and everything they have done in this situation has left them in an untenable position.

This appointment has killed of any hopes TD had of using an election to their advantage, and only Rovers have come out of this sorry situation with any kudos as they handled the situation very well.

Game over now Rovers 3-13 TD 0-1

Not strictly true but as far as I know he has no real ties with any sport, beyond standard PR tactics.

You would be hard pushed to find any TD with stronger GAA ties than O'Donoghue so if he didn't back down I can't see anyone else doing so - barring a change in FF/Government policy (maybe it was a dealbreaker for the Green's who want the ugly concrete half-stand demolished to make way for a wind farm or something... )

Very good. A good chunk of his constituency is in the SDCC area. Not least where I grew up. We have family connections to him as well. This is a very good appointment from a Rovers point of view.

One thing for sure is that he'll fully understand who and what Rovers are about as his constituency has a huge amount of current/latent Rovers fans... and IMO he won't be found wanting on this issue... he's good as it gets when it comes to a FF politician been fair minded and decent...did I really just say that !!
