    Am I mad?

Am considering walking away (although have had threats of being pushed due to my absenteeism last year due to 2 operations on my ankle & a hospital stay for Asthma) from a cushy but boring public service job and going to work in my dream shop with the opportunity of buying it, expanding it and becoming my own boss, getting the chance to follow my dreams and doing healing & working with Angels too.

Do I give up security in a job I hate to take risks of getting what my heart desires? Have a mortgage & kids to consider.

    Help!

how much will you enjoy the new post? i mean, sure it'll probably be better than a boring public service job in the short run, but owning a business is a lot of stress, often a 24 hour job and can wear away your enthusiasm fast. while you're still in the boring job, you still have every hour outside that where you can forget it and enjoy your time off.

thats not to say you wont enjoy it and the obvious perks like taking days off and being your own boss are great, but how much would it be putting your existing free time at risk?

and, im trying my hardest to be impersonal and un-sexist sounding, but does your family have another source of income?

Would you not be able to get a year off the public service to see how it goes before committing?
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

You can take a year career break from the public service but you can't work in Ireland for that period. So would rule out that option.

It's the age old question of heart versus head. I know in my case head usually wins.

I've never looked back, but then I'm not your typical employee type. And it is a lot of hard work, but it doesn't really seem like work when I enjoy it so much, and when it lines my own pocket directly. Course when it wasn't lining my pockets, it was a lot of stress.

IMHO it's a personality thing, you either can do it or you can't. You'll find out pretty quickly if you can't, so it might be worth considering Risteard's approach.

Oh, and yes, you would appear to be mad; at least in general.

Handy to know for future reference. Although the Dept of Enterprise, Trade and Employment would collapse without me

My job is a contract to contract at the mo, and contract is due for renewal (or not) next week. I may not have a choice come next Wednesday. I am a single mum & the kids dad gives a pittance towards them so the security of their lives lies solely with me.

I am going to discuss it with the person who owns the shop today, and am hoping that she will let me work there for awhile to "test the waters" of the business b4 I commit to it. It is totally a follow my dreams or toe the line situation.

And thanks Adam, as if I needed my insanity confirmed!!

What do the Angels tell you to do? from experience they are seldom wrong
Don't normally go in for all that tarot and medium stuff but the ma and mrs raptor got into angels a while back and I've done a few card readings and been dumbfounded by the accuracy of them

personally, i dont think you should be asking anyone on here.

But, is it possible to do a both for a while? I mean cushy public service sounds like a 35 hour week? possibly flexible working, could you try working 1 day a week a couple of evenings or something like that, before you make the big lunge. Kids and more importantly a mortgage are a lot to consider.

If you have health issues then setting up your own business is a huge risk. Remember if you need time off for illness or other family members there is no employer (public or private) to pay for your time off.

true, but as a LTD company you can pay into a sick fund ( like private health insurance ) to cover yourself and write it off to tax.

And PHI has a "waiting period" before you can claim, ok for long term illness but for the short one weekers will not pay out.

Go for it hon, if you believe in doing it. Even if it all goes bad, you are resourceful enough to start again quickly, and the energy boost from donig something positive in your life should reflect on the kids too.
That question was less stupid, though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

Help me, Arthur Murphy, you're my only hope!

First Division licenced clubs dont get full time CPO's so have been working on it as a volunteer just like do the media officer work as a volunteer.

As for my health issues, tbh I think alot of it comes from the fact that I am not happy in my job. Being happy at your work and more positive about life in general leads to a healthier you. Also my little sister & my mum have both said that they would love to work in there anytime I have to go away (CPO meetings once a month!) or am ill. So I know I would be covered, mite not have much money but would b able to keep the shop open.

Block, the Angels have been guiding me in this direction. I have decided it is what I need to do & intend doing it but I just wonder if now is the right time. I spoke with the lady who owns the shop yesterday and she wasnt as positive about my idea to work there part-time (for feck all money) but I am trusting that the Angels will guide her too.

My cushy job is part-time as it is 9-1pm each day and flexitime is being introduced next week (but still would have to work 10-12 at least every day) but I just dont feel happy here anymore and I know that it is only fear that is holding me back.

Paul - I know what you mean, but I dont want to talk to my friends about it just yet but there are so many people on here with valuable experiences that I felt that I could pick brains.

Partisan - my name elsewhere is Witchie......I practise Wicca....am a veggie so cant believe am saying this.....bring on the Stake!
