Newsflash, aparently we are not the worst now.

    By Darren Ennis

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Liverpool fans cannot be blamed for the trouble at the Champions League final in Athens two weeks ago and are not the worst behaved in Europe, UEFA president Michel Platini told Reuters on Tuesday.

Asked whether Liverpool supporters caused the fracas at some of the entry gates before the match against AC Milan at the Olympic Stadium, Platini replied: "No we cannot say that, we cannot point the finger.

"The issue is not that they are English or Spanish, one club or another, it is simply about fans who travel without tickets and it can be anyone."

The president added: "This is an old story. We know about this, it is just that more English fans follow their clubs than those from other countries.

"It is not as if one set of fans are good or one set bad. This is not the question in the end. We cannot go around saying that."

Platini, contradicting statements attributed to UEFA officials last week, also said of Liverpool's supporters: "No they are not the worst behaved in Europe. It's official, they are not the worst behaved in Europe."

Platini was speaking after a meeting with British sports minister Richard Caborn during which he handed over a report into security problems at last month's Champions League final in which AC Milan beat Liverpool 2-1.

UEFA officials had blamed Liverpool fans for causing the majority of the problems before the match, alleging that hundreds of English supporters who had no tickets or forged tickets forced their way into the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

An official said Liverpool fans had been involved in 25 incidents at away matches in the last four years making them the worst behaved among followers of clubs in European competition.

That would require Irish fans actually singing, making anything that can be construed as noise, or just doing something besides sitting on their hands at games

Where did Rangers end up in the bad boys league? It's hard to have belief in the credibility of the criteria that was used to nail Liverpool. It smells of ulterior motives.

I wouldn't say Rangers would be near the top.

    Feyenord must be up there.

Did Rangers fans not get a ban from europe this season? I know they were in bother in Osasuna. Sectarian chants and all the usual Rangers and Celtic rubbish and the peelers waded in. Feyenord must be top in truth, the club was thrown out of the competition and im sure the italians clubs will be well placed also.

i can understand where you are coming from, but where im my post does it say anything aboutshouting at other fans, etc?

i always am fairly intense when the games are on, and so are most of the irish fans
remeber the germans and their all singing all dancing fans, and there 12 attempts at the mexican wave............great but not during the bloody game.....and it was the irish fans who refused to join in.........instead concentrating on the game in hand

so dont paint all irish fans as event junkies, thet are not

but heavens above, we are allowed to enjoy ourselves when we go abroad, or has Stan and his players perfomace totally got you in a bad mood

Would you class a sectarian song as bad as a bottle thrown?

Rangers got fined for Sectarian chanting, which is of course very serious and they rightly got fined.

But in terms of actual violence I do not think Rangers would come close to the top.

Celtic fans are a credit to themselves when they go away in Europe. They enjoy themselves and sectarianism is very much a minority in Europe.

I'm just back from a holiday with a load of English/Scousers.

I read out the story about Liverpool fans being the worst in Europe, and commented that it was a load of sh!t. To my huge surprise, the scousers and most of the English agreed with it ! There was a general feeling - particularly amongst my scouse mates - that there is a long-standing culture for a significant chunk of fans at both Liverpool and Everton of actively trying to get into games without paying and without tickets. And often it's attempting to get in by any means (e.g. theft, forgery, assault etc).

If even fans of Liverpool and Everton think that there's a problem, then that's good enough for me.....

    Top story: scousers steal stuff.
In other news: the sky is blue, grass is green, and things fall down rather than up.

It's hardly a 'general feeling" more a well-known fact. It's called jibbing and the term itself (as well as the practice) is very common in Liverpool and the north west in general. It goes back to the beginnings of casual culture and LFC fans travelling en masse to Europe where they jibbed the trains, jibbed into the games, cleaned-out sports shops etc.

I have been at 15 Liverpool games and I must say that the fans are brilliant. I have good friends over there also and I can say that I always get well treated over there and the fans have a real community spirit in the ground. Liverpool being described as the worst fans in Europe is a load of balloney.

Belgium played Ireland in Heysel in 1981 . A friend of mine went and told me even then the stadium was falling down. That's a whole 3.5 years before the 1985 European Cup Final... on a related point the nonsensical nature of some of the Premiershi* fans based in this country is illustrated by the following story.

Some years ago before summer soccer Shelbourne played ManUre in a pre-season friendly and Vinny Arkins was playing for Shels who were wearing all red. One of the ManUre Irish contingent shouted '' You scouse bas*ard at Arkins!'' How fcuking thick is that ?
