    U21 Representitive competition

    From www.waterford-united.ie

Two of Waterford United's younger stars will get the opportunity to star on the international stage after they were selected on the eircom league's under 21 squad for the forthcoming tournament between the North, Scotland and Wales which takes place in Scotland.

Conor McDonald and Mitchell Casey have been called up by the team's manager Mick Neville.

Whats the story with this competition did anyone hear anything about it?

Dundalk FC would like to congratulate two of our most promising young local players on their call up to the League of Ireland U-21 squad. Manager Mick Neville has selected Shane Grimes and Kevin McArdle for the panel that will compete against representative teams from the Vauxhall Conference, Scottish Highland league and Welsh League.

Rovers have four players selected in the eircom League U21 representative side travelling to a friendly international tournament Scotland next Sunday. Unfortunately Dean Lawrence and Ciaran Kilduff have been pulled from the squad due to first team commitments but we will be represented by Karl Coleman and Glenn Walsh in the travelling party. This is further recognition of the recent achievements for the young Hoops.

Instead of posting individual club press releases, could someone not link to the full squad?

Unfortunately??? Dean Lawrence and Ciaran Kilduff are already playing at a far higher level than anything that mickey mouse tournament offers. It's be a reasonable run out for young lads who haven't broken through into senior football. That's it at most.

The Republic of Ireland squad to take part in the Four Nations Tournament in Scotland next week was today formally announced by manager Mick Neville.

Ireland will face England, Scotland and Wales in the annual tournament, which this year will be held in Scotland. Neville has named a 21-man squad for the tournament.

The Four Nations Tournament is held every year, with Ireland having hosted the event two years ago.

Reading’s Shane Long played in the tournament two years ago, while Sunderland’s Daryl Murphy captained the Ireland side three years ago. Eamon Zayed (Drogheda United) and Ronan Finn (UCD) are amongst the current stars of the eircom League of Ireland to have played for Ireland in the tournament.

“The Four Nations Tournament is a really great opportunity for young players to further develop themselves”, said manager Mick Neville.

“We’ve got a strong squad with some excellent young players, so we’re really looking forward to this tournament.”

    Republic of Ireland squad:

    Goalkeepers
    Eugene Ferry Derry City
    Karl Colman Shamrock Rovers

    Defenders:
    Gareth Whelan Drogheda United
    Shane Grimes Dundalk
    Ger O’Brien Shamrock Rovers
    Mitchell Casey Waterford Utd
    Ray Lally Cork City
    Brian Rooney St Patrick’s Athletic
    Noel Haverty St Patrick’s Athletic

    Midfielders:
    Killian Brennan Derry City
    Declan Cahill Cork City
    Mark O’Brien Bohemians
    James O’Sullivan UCD
    Shane Fitzgerald UCD
    Kevin McArdle Dundalk
    Cathal Lordan Cork City
    John Lester Galway United

    Forwards:
    Conor McDonald Waterford United
    Vinny Faherty Satlhill Devon
    David Brackan Shelbourne

Surprise surprise, thought it was strange that these players were in the squad in the first place!

Which is why no team you've ever entered into this tournament has ever won it. Even back in 2002 when you entered your senior players?

That's a pretty disrespectful view to take of the competition. The kids you put out will be gaining invaluable experience against largely full-time opposition.
