Myler left sickbed to help Drogs

Drogheda United manager Harry McCue revealed how play-off final hero Andy Myler got out of his sickbed to help his side to victory over Galway United at O2 Park on Saturday evening.

The game finished 2-0 in favour of the Drogs after 90 minutes, and a third goal from Danny O’Connor during the resultant extra-time salvaged the club’s Premier Division status for another year.

Myler was left out of the starting line-up after being stricken with ‘flu for the previous 24 hours, but made an immediate impact when introduced with the score locked at 0-0 and little more than half an hour of normal time remaining.

Declan O’Brien won a penalty two minutes later, and Myler stepped up to convert his fourth spot-kick of the season. That goal dragged Drogheda back into the tie, and with all the momentum in their favour, they equalised just eight minutes later and grabbed the winner in the 104th minute of the game, just
moments after being reduced to ten men with the sending-off of Mark Quinless.

And McCue was ever grateful to his ailing front man. He said: “Andy had spent two days in bed with flu. He rang me on Saturday morning and said he was feeling light-headed but asked me to put him on the bench and he might be able to do 45 minutes.

“He ended up having to do more because of the extra-time but he was brilliant. I would put my house on him to score a penalty.”
