Looking forward to the game on Friday, the next 3 are must wins to set up the 6 pointer V Finn Harps in the battle for 3rd, i would be delighted to finish 3rd now and get a chance at the playoff. A lot of soccer left to play yet!

Just wondering what the format for promotion is?
Is the winners go up automatically and 2nd play 2nd from bottom in a play off??

Juts curious as the L37 website has L37 underlined so I thought it might be 2 from each div going into a 4 team play off for pormotion??

1 straight up, 1 straight down. 2nd and 3rd in the First Division play off with the winners taking on second bottom in the Premier for the last top flight place. So as things stand Dundalk would replace Longford and the winners of a Cobh - Limerick game would play Waterford for the last spot.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

really? why it'd be a joke if the 3rd placed team won promotion

Why? Sure that's how Galway did it last year (even without the inconvenience of taking part in the playoff).

1st goes up autmatically, then 2nd plays 3rd in a once off game where 2nd are at home. The winners of that play 2nd last from the Premier League over tow legs.

agree, anybody think main reason could be finances, or more publicity.

well ya, both really!! I mean if it was two legs it would be different but say Cobh finish way head of Limerick in terms of points and then Limerick beat them by a fluke then it would be a joke!!

the system works well in the championship in england, it gives teams more to play for towards the end of the season, say cobh do end up running away with second spot, it still leaves l37 and harps with a lot to play for going into the run in instead of just having to fulfil fixtures, good idea imo

    I reckon 1-0 to L37.
We'll miss 10+ open goal chances
while Paugie nets the winner for ye.

Would be worth it if we could score from open play but I guess one has to go in sometime and the referees are getting good at giving us penalties.

True enough, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having a league.

A league means that a team which has proven itself superior to another over al arge number of games (not always directly against the other team of course) will finish in a higher position and reap whatever rewards there are.

A playoff at the end of the league negates the whole idea.

I can understand it to some extent when the number of teams in each division is changing, with more being relegated than promoted or vice versa, but in this case the number is 2 up 2 down, so it seems completely unnessecary.

Wouldnt be complaining if Limerick made it up that way though.
