League & Michael Byrne Cup Champions 07

14-5-07 Athenry are League & Cup Champions

Athenry are the new Western Hygiene Supplies Premier League Champions and Michael Byrne Cup Champions 2006/07.

Athenry defeated Salthill in Drom on thursday 1-3 , to win the Galway Premier League title for the first time in the clubs history. Athenry went 3 up in the first half , with goals from Alan O Donavan, Stephen Rabbitte and Paddy Quinn. Salthill replied in the second half but Athenry deservedly went on and took the title from Salthill & Mervue.

In the Michael Byrne Cup Final Athenry trounced rivals Mervue Utd 4-0 in Terryland park yesterday with goals from Benny Costello(2), Ollie Keogh and Alan O Donovan. Athenry went about the task brilliantly to defeat Mervue and land their second title in 3 days. Athenry now look forward to the Connacht Cup Final this coming Saturday.

When was the last time a non-city club won the Premier??? When was the last time Mervue took such a hiding?
