That gets my goat up. We'll happily watch the US originals of good shows over here - hell, we'll happily watch the US originals of bad shows over here, but no chance will they just run a British (or Irish (*snigger*)) show over in the states. Bloody insular.

I can see the logic. The BBC versions is nostalgia for 70s cop shows but they have different 70s cop shows in the US.

Only seen bits of the US Office but its written in US humour just inspired by the UK version so it seems to work.

Love the way people don't read the original criteria....

Anyway Pete, the US Office is the funniest thing on TV by a long way.

Can't understand why people care about this. The UK original has a total of 12 episodes, of half a season's worth of US television. It's not like they've gone around burning all copies of the original, it's still there. The Office (UK) arguably achieved more critical acclaim (and was watched by more people) in the US than in it's home country.

I'm in the middle of Life On Mars at the minute, having missed it the first time, but there's no reason that show couldn't have gone on for years - just space the "coma" bits out a bit more to remind people of the original premise without teasing the audience too much.

Mitch Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development, was due to run a US version of The Thick of It which has a grand total of 8 episodes spread out over 2+ years - you just can't get away with that in US TV

Sadly, after the pilot (directed by Christopher Guest!) was made it looks like the series wasn't picked up.

And did you see the cast? Usual Guest people. Grrr

Anyway it works both ways. Lots of British (and Irish) people don't rate US tv as they see it as formulaic or something but bar Gervais's comedies and maybe Phoenix Nights there hasn't been a good British sitcom this millenium (The Thick of It wasn't good IMO) while America has churned out classic after classic.

i hate American Tv shows, well most of them anyway........silly story lines, bad acting, and dull, and they take themselves way too seriously
Gone are the days when they made great TV............A Team, Streets of SF, Cagney and Lacey, macguiver, etc

anyway the best thing on Tv at the moment for me is...............
Life On Mars...............missed it the first time round, brilliant, and Simms is excellent (as ever)
and Eircom League Weekly...................Osam is a great actor, top drawer

Only started watching the 1st series of the Life of Mars but I can see how it will run out of plot fairly quickly. Its just like a re-run of a 70s cop show as very little link to the present day...

US Office is on my list.

Ditto. I'm desperate to see Season 4 of The Wire. The first three series were just awesome. IMO it's the best TV drama ever made. Better than the Sopranos by a distance.

Life On Mars - I just didn't get at all. Saw a few episodes (including the last one) but I can't see how people raved about it.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Would the likes of The Office and Life On Mars not be on BBC America? Thought it was from their that Gervais won the Emmy's?

Another one for the list is House. Didn't really get it to start with, but coming around to it big time now. Going in the opposite direction is Shark - thought it had potential but kinda losing interest in it now (probably would've except for Sarah Carter!). Another US import which we'd watch is NCIS, be interesting how it goes after the end of the last season. Actually we'd be fairly lost for telly without five thinking about it.

Shut it you jesse. I don't really think it was one that you could dip in and out off, and also I think you'd have to appreciate some of the old TV shows.

Those Storyville documentaries that appear on BBC2 now and then(after Newsnight) I would highly reccomend.Last weeks featured a well known news reporter who videoed his life as he descented into Crack cocaine addiction was riveting albeit shocking in parts.
In fact most documentaries have me riveted.
