I'm sure Superhoops will pop up with the precise detail
Not quite that Austria game was Sunday 30th May 1971. We also played the away tie against Austria in that campaign on Sunday 10th October 1971.

Since then the following Home games have been played on Sundays:
    21st October 1973 - Friendly - Poland in Dalymount
    24th April 1977 - Friendly - Poland in Dalymount
26th May 1985 - Friendly - Spain in Flower Lodge, Cork
    2nd June 1985 - WCQ - Switzerland in Lansdowne
    22nd May 1988 - Friendly - Poland in Lansdowne
    28th May 1989 - WCQ - Malta in Lansdowne
    4th June 1989 - WCQ - Hungary in Lansdowne
5th June 1994 - Friendly - Czech Republic in Lansdowne
    11th June 1995 - ECQ - Austria in Lansdowne
    2nd June 1996 - Friendly - Croatia in Lansdowne
    10th November 1996 - WCQ - Iceland in Lansdowne

There have also been several away games played on Sundays, friendlies, testimonials, invitation tournaments, EC and WC qualifers and of course in the WC and EC finals.
Honest! I am not a secret Tim nor a closet Sham - I really am a Seagull.

The point about the Sunday games re Steve Heighway had relevance if there was a league programme in England the day before.
I see from the date of the competitve Austria game that the league programme had finished in England, so Sunday was a good choice of day.
From that list, maybe only one or two friendlies against Poland followed a Saturday league game.

Yes, Steve Heighway plays it clean:
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

That youtube account has been closed but I expect it was this video about Heighway, and yet he did
make his Ireland début (pardon my French ) before before his Liverpool début well the video says so anyway.

Loads of players made their international debuts before club ones...back in the 'olden days'.

Name a half load of them, then.

BTW, Heighway doesn't count. He made his Liverpool first team debut just before his first cap.

There are probably a couple of recent ones. Surely Staunton capped a couple of players before their clubs did. Darren Potter, maybe?

A good number of Leeds players back in the '70's...and Liverpool and numerous others. So what?

If I don't see him, he doesn't exist.

Turns out from those Ecuador and Bolivia games, Joe O'Cearuill, Stephen Gleeson and Stephen O'Halloran (remember him?) had made their debuts on loan in the months previous. Still, all credit to Stan for unearthing hidden gems.

Staunton himself was a Euro 88 call up before he played for Liverpool. I think.

Offhand, I remember Giles being from Leeds in the 1970's. I don't recall any other Leeds player for us in the '70's.

From Liverpool, Beglin and Stan. Maybe a few others, here and there, scattered over the years, but not loads.

Giles played for Manchester United before he was capped for Ireland.

Potter had appeared a few times for Liverpool before he was called up. Stephen O'Halloran was capped before he played for Villa

    Stephen O'Halloran, the USA tour?
if a player turned up at the airport with his boots, Stan would have said 'yeah come along, you never know'.
I thought he was one of the great hopes at the time, but he picked up serious injury after serious injury before his senior career got off the ground.

Tets, any Leeds players capped in the '70s, apart from Giles of course?

not sure, don't think there was any prominent Leeds players anyway
From the 100 greatest Leeds players on wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...A.F.C._players - only Giles features from the 70's

There were, just not for Ireland.
Terry Yorath, David Harvey & Frank Gray spring to mind...

Stan wasn't in the Euro 88 squad.

Was always a decent question, who were the only players to make all 3 squads in 88, 90 and 94. There's 9 if memory serves.....
