Longford announce Dempsey signing
Longford Town manager Alan Matthews has succeeded in creating competition for the Flancare Park goalkeeping berth by signing former Double-winning netminder Michael Dempsey from Dundalk.
Stephen O’Brien, the current number one at the midlands club, is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the eircom League, but the capture of ex-Bohemians man Dempsey is sure to keep O’Brien on his toes in the forthcoming summer season.
Dempsey, a one-time Irish-21 international, has witnessed his reputation fall somewhat since helping the then-Roddy Collins managed Bohs to the League and Cup Double two years ago: he subsequently signed for Dundalk, but in a disastrous two years for the border-club, he has been unable even to hold down the goalkeeper’s shirt at Oriel Park, the position oscillating between him and John Connolly.
But the 27-year-old, who was considered by many to be an outstanding prospect when making his debut for Bohemians in the mid-1990s, will hope to regain past form under the leadership of Matthews.
However, his arrival at Flancare Park – the second major acquisition following the capture of Bray Wanderers midfielder Philip Keogh last week – will undoubtedly lead to speculation that first-choice O’Brien will be on his way to one of the league’s bigger sides.
Seamus Kelly is reputed to be on his way out of St Patrick’s Athletic, and Saints manager Pat Dolan could cast his eyes towards Strokestown Road in order to find a replacement for the former Cardiff City man, who is bound for either Bohemians or Shamrock Rovers.

Hmmm, just thinking (which is strange for me at this hour of the morning).....
It was alleged at the time of Lawlors departure that a certain rotund goalkeeper particularly didn't like the training methods and the manager.....
Matthews and O'Callaghan were part of the backroom team.....
Any possibility that this could be related to the dressing room “issues” from those times???

yes true... Lawlor reckoned Digger needed to lose weight and the same plan was responcible for Vinny returning to training slim... could be the same although Matthews wouldn't rock the boat with Digger...
Digger must stay!!!!!!!He's part of the whole "town experience" Altogether now: "you put your left leg in.........."
