The club has published a Financial Statement for each of the last few seasons outlining its revenue (never enough!) and its expenditure (always too much!).
In taking the decision to "go professional" serious account was taken of setting a budget and staying within that budget. Any self respecting manager would like to go after "class" players and if successful would have to pay them accordingly.
So our manager is very conscious of the costs involved in offering contracts to players he believes will do a job for us.
All businesses carry the bulk of their expenditure as pay costs. The nurses currently on strike don't want the public to know that for every euro spent on health between 70 and 80 cent goes on wages and salaries and most of this goes on nurses salaries.
Its no different in a professional soccer club, most of the expenditure goes on players wages.
There's no point in denying that players unhappiness about team mates wages being "higher" has caused divisions and affected morale in clubs. (Again it's the same in lots of employments).
I'd say if you want specifics look for the clubs financial statements. But as a loyal supporter I'd rather not get specific in a forum such as this one.
The bottom line is that a once great club like Leeds United are on the verge of going belly-up because of historical financial mismanagement, and Chelsea were headed down exactly the same road until someone with EXTRAORDINARY wealth (regardless of how he got it) came along.
