Think that's a bit strong. I have no time for national athems at sporting events myself but it defintely has it place at official state type functions etc. Playing the irish anthem in a pub is tacky in my eyes. I definitely wouldnt stand for it.

However, our national is still played at the end of the night in Liverpool but everyone whether english, irish, scottish, welsh,..... loves it and sings it with pride.

Jaysus, that's rich. Saying it's too old fashioned etc... And that coming from someone with a Cork Hibs avatar and a handle like yours!

Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

If you put it into the context of how things are in other countries, such as the Scandinavian countries, the National Anthem is not played nearly enough. The Scandinavian countries are also big National "flag wavers". It's very common that Scandinavians have a National flag hanging in their garden/ or attached to their homes in some form. I've also eaten many a meal in Sweden where a miniature Swedish flag is sitting in the middle of the table. Compare this to Ireland. If somebody hung up an Irish tricolour in their garden or had a miniature flag on the dinner table, they'd never hear the last of it.

The biggest problem with our National Anthem is not that it is played too often or in pubs, it's the fact that a sizeable, and I'd guess the majority of the population do not know the words to it.

They play that at the end of the nite in the pig too!

My dad was in a showband and tells of how one nite they were somewhere in the North and started playing the Irish National Anthem until they saw the angry faces and quickly had to change to the British one. One nite club in Monaghan still plays it I think but thats it. The place I used to go as a teenager played it at the end but then followed it with "New York New York" so that became the real anthem.

TBH its just a song. Get over it. If the words were anyway appropriate to the struggles of today then I would sing it with pride.

How about "I cant afford a house, I wait 3 hours in traffic to go to work and my mum is on a hospital trolley for 10 days now" That is more an Irish anthem than anything else.

    Yeah it's terrible.

I just sing the first few lines and then mumble through the middle and then, when the end is coming up, I just start cheering like crazy as loud as I can.

Been getting away with that for years now... beats learning the feckin thing anyway.

I think a lot a bands play it to ensure that they do not have to listen to the more, more more chants from the crowd who want a few more songs. When the anthem is played and the lights come on the band are saying night over, we are going home. Same for the publicans - Its an easier way for them to say - Now, we are really closing
Band finishing, pub closing, it's definately time to stand up

Now you're on the right track. Most national anthems are rubbish songs and should be updated so we can all move on from the historical baggage.

As a compromise to the Shinners, Celtic supporters and hardline GAA heads who didn't want God Save The Queen played at Croke Park I suggested an alternative, inoffensive anthem that everyone could get behind

    Put your hands up,
    Put your hands up,
Put your hands up for the Queen!
    I love that Lizzy!

I'd like to propose the Darts song to replace Amhrán na bhFiann - no way anyone could be accused of not knowing the words.

Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do DARTS! DARTS! DARTS! Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do DARTS! DARTS! DARTS!....
    Any other suggestions...?

he was good friends with some of my cousins when he was here in the U.S., don't know him well myself but remember hearing about the success of the Pig after he had returned, pretty impressive place.

What happens when hospital problems are cured, we write a new line about getting to the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa? What about the people who can afford houses, or whose only traffic problem is the sheep straying across the road? It doesn't matter what the lyrics are as it's not about identifying with the lyrics. In this day in age a literal interpretation is not going to be the case, it's a manifestation of patriotism best left well alone from Phil Coulter, Bono or the likes.

Yeah true kingdom. Most doesnt apply to me coz I can afford a lovely home in my small town and only sit in traffic for bout 5 mins on my way to work (and if it stops being so rainy will walk to work!) but my heart patient mum had to sleep on a trolley for 3 days a few months ago & I had to stay on one for 2 days rececently. The day they change the hospital system to an efficient one I will gladly sing any song they tell me to!
