Meanwhile, on the same weekend that O’Riordan signed a winger, three very talented Sligo players were off to pastures new.
Monaghan United have signed up the services of Sligo Rovers U-21 player Damien Scanlon and Abbey United prodigies Keith Carty and Stephen Hallahan.
All three players confirmed their move over the weekend and will start the new season with the eircom League First Division team, based in Century Homes Park.
Carty was honoured as recently as February for his amazing displays with Abbey.
He received the Sligo Weekender Sligo Sports Award for Junior Soccer (2002), and also the plaudits of many players and managers for his goalscoring ability.
Hallahan will be part of the Sligo-Leitrim U-18 side facing the Wexford League in next Saturday’s Snickers FAI Youth Inter-League Cup quarter-final.
Prior to joining Sligo Rovers’ U-21 side, Damien Scanlon was a regular and committed player at Strand Celtic.
It is not known whether Sligo Rovers were in contact with any of the three players with a view to signing them for the forthcoming season.
Sligo’s first fixture of the new eircom League First Division season will be against Limerick FC in the Showgrounds on Saturday, April 12.
