Hurling is the only GAA game worth comparison in terms of skill with any of the global codes.
It shows what a bunch of philistines most GAA fans are that more of them don't go to hurling.

Couldn't agree more. You only have to look at the counties who thrive in gaelic football to realise it's for the uncivilised

Oh and for the record it's official Eircom League gates are up this season

McCadden highlights a very interesting point.

Lots of GAA grounds up and down the country are built on Council owned land.

I'm sure the lads down in Killarney will thank TD when someone looks to play Rugby there, or City look to play soccer in Pairc Ui Chaoimh

Dublin v Tyrone was once off floodlight event which filled Croke Park so obviously that would not be held in a 20,000 all seater stadium. As the GAA are looking for this to be built in Dublin I presume only Dublin League games would be played there as its too small for Championship games?

Galway v Mayo could have been played in the small stadium but would that mean Croke Park built at huge cost would be idle...?

The GAA obviously don't do logic. First they want to play Dublin League games in Tallaght (6k capacity) but now they think need for 20,000 capacity stadium. If Dublin League crowds can fit into Tallaght then surely they need their own 6,000 capacity ground?

I know LOI attendances are low (clubs do have 20-30 home games a season though) which is why we don't ask the government to build us large stadiums we can't fill.

The major Dublin club games all have to be played in Parnell Park as there isn't a southside stadium capable of hosting them. These, along with some county league games would have been earmarked for the smaller 6k Southside stadium (Rathcoole?) for which there is a very real need, according to many. It just doesn't necessarily have to be in Tallaght.

There are many occasions where a 20-25,000 capacity stadium in the Dublin region would be ideal for GAA games - the very examples you gave of league play-offs (more in Croke Park tomorrow night), qualifier-round matches, club finals, women's gaelic football/camogie, etc. Yes, Croke Park would be idle as you put it - it would be idle if the games were in Thurles, Clones, wherever.

It's often been pointed out that the costs of opening a huge stadium are prohibitively expensive for sub 30,000 crowds in the long-run so it makes sense for the GAA to avail of a smaller stadium if the Government is willing to pay for one. I don't get where you're going with this arguement because from a GAA point-of-view the 'logic' (use of taxpayer-funded stadiums with no risk to themselves) is flawless.

It's an open secret rhe FAI are trying to build a small 10,000 seater stadium in Abbottstown. This is the GAA's attept to hijack that. They probably need to ban a few more government ministers

From the SRFC Forum:

Basically the piece in today's Daily Mail claims the SDDC have frozen funds to at least 3 CLG clubs until the outcome of the JR. It effects St Mark & TD's in Tallaght & Lucan Sarsfields. They need money to develop training pitches, then they can extend leases.

Apparently another GAA club in Tallaght have told Thomas Davis' to go off and do one...

If these clubs are entitled to money the fact another club are in legals with SDCC insn't really relevant.

Better off playing this straight.

No problem with holding any money due to Thomas Bigots. However some of the other clubs have dropped the bigots like a hot potato (admittedly when they wanted cash for the court case). Some are quite upset at what is happening too. They seem to have the deluded idea that they should be promoting their own sports instead of trying to kill football clubs.

I think it's a fair enough move - if the GAA win the Tallaght battle, then I can see a situation whereby all new grounds that receive funding do so on a municipal basis. SDCC aren't going to fund grounds exclusively for GAA clubs and grounds that are for everybody including GAA clubs. Therefore they're waiting to see the outcome of the present case. Ironically, if TD win, it could spell the end of GAA only grounds in the area.

The GAA at county and national level has rolled in behind TDs, so all bets are off regarding other grants.

Additionally, the JR may have the effect of altering how SDCC allocates sports funding going forward, so it is prudent to wait until clarity is provided.

But afaik most grants are awarded at national level by the Department through the Sports Council. Very few grants would be through SDCC or any other CC for that matter.

It's not a ploy by SDCC it's on legal advice. If TD are successful then every single local authority-funded development is up for grabs. SDCC have been told not to fund anything in the interim. Hence Lucan Sarsfields and St Marks' cash being put on hold.

So ironically enough TD's actions are now hurting their GAA comrades as well as stopping local kids from playing their games in Tallaght Municipal Stadium. How pig-headed can you get?

The sheer arrogance of TD/DK is unbelieveable at this stage, in the high court today they fought vigorously to have their legal costs to date passed on with SDCC & SRFC expected to pay them!!!

Not only are they trying to stop the stop SRFC getting into Tallaght they now want us to pay them to do it as well!!!!!

Staggering arrogance to say the least!!
