You can pick up the first 2 seasons very cheap on DVD in a lot of places. Anyway, as good as The Shield is, The Wire is where it's at at the moment. Season 4 is on TG4 on Mondays but it'll make no sense unless you've been watching it from the start. I would highly, highly recommend getting the season 1 box set. You will not be disappointed.

I'm an idiot, I cannot for the life of me watch tv series on tv. I just wait for them to come out on dvd. The Wire is going to be my next purchase, because it seems to be excellent.

Best show on TV. The 2nd series is amazing, another has got Glenn Close in it which is good, but the latest one shown here (5th) with a brilliant character played by Forrest Whittaker is amazing, watch out for the final episode. I think series six has started in America. Channel 5 and TV3 show them, Five is always ahead of TV3 though.

They only released the first and 2nd series here on DVD, the third is out in July. You have to buy the American discs to view the rest of the series, or download the episodes.

I concur - best programme on the box (including the soprano's!!!). I'm on episode 10 of the 3rd series but have taped all the series 4 episodes shown so far on the FX channel.

The shield is also brilliant but it looks like series 3 plus won't be released on DVD. A bloody shame.

I also concur re "The Wire" shakermaker - (I've already posted this on the Sopranos thread) I've just discovered "The Wire" - on episode 12 of the first series - and I've already bought box set of seson 2 Have missed all of season 4 on tg4 though. It's quite probably the best tele series I've ever seen. Awesome. To anyone out there who hasn't seen it yet, make the effort, you won't be disappointed.

I assume you're talking about the series after the one where Forest Whitaker is introduced? Those of us in Ireland will have to wait until TV3 show it.

Lofty - the best is yet to come for you. Series 3 and 4 of the Wire are quality,

Just seen in the paper tonight. Looks like TG4 are repeating Season 4 of The Wire, starting tonight at midnight. I can't wait. It's made my week

Also, on The Shield. I've just finished Season 1 on DVD. Pretty good, but it doesn't come close to The Wire.

Sky + and series link... nice one.

The Shield is a lot grittier/dirtier, more shock and always has you on the edge. The Wire is so smoothly written and intelligent, it would cater for a wider audience than the Shield.
