It's a bit of a myth. A bad penalty but where the keeper guesses wrong looks emphatic. The same penalty but where the keeper guesses right looks crap.

I remember hearing Van Basten talking about taking penalties. He was saying that the good keepers will study your body shape as you approach the ball, and what he used to do was fairly simple - run up as if to stick it (say)right, then last second turn his foot the other way and roll it left, ending up with the body shape of a player striking a ball in one direction but with just his foot turned in to stick it the other side.

Seemed to work alot or him as I recall...
    The dude abides....

I used to think it was unfair for penalty takers to pause their run up to hit the penalty. I've changed my mind on that though. After seeing Keane's penalty at Wigan, I tried it in a match and I missed emphatically, makes it very hard to aim if you aren't accustomed to taking them that way.

packie bonner said that he and gerry peyton talked a lot about penalties in the run up to the romanian game at WC 90. they decided if a player runs up to the ball from a wide angle then he will put it back the way he came from(e.g. right footer kicks it into the left corner as striker looks at it, gk's right) but if he runs up pretty straight then it goes into the natural corner (e.g. right footer kicks it into the right corner as striker looks at it, gk's left).

it worked for bonner as he went the right way for all of the penalties and saved one (.....memories).

just as well he had the chat with peyton as only weeks before celtic lost the scotish cup final to aberdeen in a penalty shoot out by a scoreline of 9-8. bonner saved none in the shoot-out and by all accounts didn't even get close!!!!!!

I remember that too. When it was 4-4 in Genoa Bonner had failed to save 13 consecutive penalties. The 14th made him a legend!

i have been taking penalties for my club since i was about 8 or so im 26 now and until recently was always a pick my side (normally right corner) but recently i have done the slow run up and wait style and i have scored 8 this season and not once has the keeper come close, my heart was in my mouth once when the cnut didnt move at all but even then by the time you strike it and he reacts it will go in, for the other 7 each time i just rolled it in the other side, easy!!

I've followed Robbie Keane's career since he made his debut for Wolves and I am 100% certain that he has missed three penalties in his career. The first miss was during the 1997/98 season for Wolves. Robbie had a penalty to finish a hattrick and he missed. I remember the Wolves manager after the game (think it was Mark McGee) said that he would build the Wolves team for the following season around Keane.

The second miss came in the final of the Euro U-18 Championships in the summer of 1998. To the best of my knowledge, Keane didn't take a penalty again until we played Spain in the 2002 Worl Cup. Since then he has missed only one penalty for club or country. As far as I can remember, that miss was for Spurs in a league match last season.

That was against Stockport County, there's a reference to it here: http://www.funtrivia.com/en/subtopic...es-125691.html

Look out for Kevin Doyle's penalty for Reading yesterday: firmly struck, top left corner, basically unstoppable, even if the keeper goes the right way.
Or Ronaldo for MU vs Boro a wee while back (after he was "fouled" by Boateng): firmly struck, top right corner, equally unstoppable.

I simply don't understand why more penalty takers don't emulate this style.

i agree hit it low and hard or high and hard into the zones where it is hard for a keeper to reach . fellas who hit them close to the keeper should never be let near the penalty spot again!!
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.

Not sure if it was top corner but he scored and he also had to put up with Stelios antics of bursting the balloon as he took the peno.
