    Sligo ban thugs

Extracted from official Sligo Rovers website.

Sligo Rovers have decided to put the boot into thugs who tarnish the club’s good name announcing that any individual caught getting into thuggish behaviour will be banned from the Showground for life.

That’s the firm message from the club following two particularly nasty incidents at the Showgrounds on Saturday, March 31.

In one incident a “golf ball type object” was thrown at the referee’s assistant from the main stand during the match against UCD which they won by 1-0 thanks to a last-gasp goal from ‘Faz’ Kuduzovic in injury time.

And two plastic bottles were hurled at a visiting fan from a section of the crowd in the Jinks Avenue stand on the same day.

The club have vowed not to allow “thugs” to tarnish the good name of Rovers who have made a splendid start to the season. They are also appealing for anybody who can identify the culprits to speak to the club in confidence.

“Sligo Rovers wishes to acknowledge the exceptional behaviour of the vast majority of its fans,” a statement said. “Unfortunately because of a tiny minority, we are forced to issue a final warning to those who throw objects of any description at other fans, players or officials.

“If anybody is caught or identified carrying out this type of hooliganism, they will be subject to a lifetime ban from the Showgrounds.

“We will not allow thugs to tarnish the club’s good name.

“We appeal to anybody who can identify the culprits to come forward to any official of the club. The information will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

The statement concludes with a stark message for the thugs: “The club will deal with the individuals as stated”.

I don't want to get into a row but it's worth pointing out that the person was reported to the stewards at the game and about 5 of the stewards were present when the incident happened. I don't see the need for Sligo to be setting up anonymous procedures. Enforcing the stadium regulations as they exist will be sufficient.

most clubs are not in a position to get involved with a large number of offending idiots during a match and maybe sometimes it might make sense to aviod conflict for the safety of all much easier to just bar them at a later date.
I wish i did not know then what I dont know now
