    Siege mentality working?

I'm starting to get the feeling that the "us against the world" attitude which Staunton has brought to the Ireland camp is beginning to work in the team's favour. The 32 second press conference, followed by Kilbane, Given, Duff and Dunne flanking Staunton for the prematch question session, all claiming that the Ireland camp is "buzzing", gives me this strange (hopeful) feeling yhat things will click tommorow, and I think it has to do with the players getting behind Stan's mentality

    Thumbs up

Somethings changing there is no question. Just listened to the comments on Sports tonight on TV3 and they are far more balanced, with people speaking out against the negativity and abuse of the team and Stan.

It would not surprise me in the slightest if Stan will come through this and we get the win tomorrow...

I will give him this. The players def appear to be behind him and the side he has picked appears to have a more balanced look about it.We do not have the players to hold possesion for long periods so it will have to be a high tempo approach. If Kilbane and Carsley can do their job in the middle then Duffer and McGeady can hopefully do the damage.God I hope, like a fool I hope.

i had the same impression listening to clips on the radio earlier. then i saw duffs interview on sports tonight. his body language was a complete give away that he was bull****ting, and that he didnt really believe any of the line he was spinning out, and at its best it was wishful thinking. e
i know he hates doing media things but i genuinely couldn't believe a word coming out of his mouth

He (Duff)was very relaxed. It didnt look like they were deeply hassled by the abuse. it looked more like the siege mentality to me.....

Just see what happens tomorrow...it could be good you know....

In Kevin Keegan parlance....I would LOVE IT, just LOVE IT if we got a win tonight.

No way do they deserve some of the crap being thrown their way. Yes the performance was poor on Saturday but now he's picked a better team and some on here are still moaning.

    C'mon Ireland!!!!!!!!!

I think we are getting carried away here.I thought the performance on Saturday was awful, only helped by the fact that Wales are even worse than us.

Stan is getting into the bunker all to early, his press conference yesterday reminded me of the end of Kerr's regime

Craig, lets be honest you're going to put a positive spin on anything. Its what they do on the pitch that counts and so far the evidence there is not up to much.

On what basis do they not deserve the crap they have been getting. This team and management were involved in two of the worst results in our countrys history. Everything they get they deserve. People are not moaning that he has picked a better team, they are moaning because of the ridicioulous team selection on Saturday and lack of organisation they showed on Saturday. It really really does not bode well for tonight, but i hope im wrong

You made me laugh there... (positive spin there again...see that!)
I'm sick of people being abusive and putting a negative spin on everything. I think thats beginning to change though. Of course results are everything...but we won on Sat and in San marino.....Just...but we won.

Here's a positive spin on the Gaffer's rare genius:

Having looked at the fixtures, Staunton figured he could afford to lose the first two away games and still qualify. Germany was a no-brainer but the "humiliating" defeat in Cyprus is where his brilliant scheme really started to kick in. Losing so spectacularly increased the pace of the media backlash against Staunton and fueled the siege mentality - "us against the world" - that has been rightly praised in this thread.

Staunton has been masterful at handling the situation since that game - 3 wins out of the last 3 means he has matched his target points total at this stage but the truly clever thing was to have his players give only the bare minimum standard of performance required to beat the worst team in Europe home and away, and the 16th worst team in Europe (missing half their team) at home in front of 68,000 of their own supporters.

My prediction is that tonight will give the media sheep and clueless fans a glimmer of optimism - another narrow win but a marginally improved performance to take a slight bit of heat out of the criticism (as he did with the Czech game).

Then we're primed for Phase 2 - by now all other countries will view us as easy pickings. Staunton will take advantage of the element of surprise with a couple of comfortable away wins before destroying Germany in front of an adoring crowd in Croke Park that have finally understood what the whole campaign has been building towards. Last two games will be a stroll and will be used to try out members of the Ireland underage squads in preparation for future World Cups and Euro Championships...

That'll be the prozac, judging by some of the posts you might want to relax on the stuff for a while.
