Indian Summer

The retirement of Keane and the 'Nightmare in Nicosia' has given Lee Carsley an international Indian Summer. Since we don't have an upcoming match to talk about, I thought I'd throw this out for discussion: What players outside the international fold right now do yous think will have an Indian Summer?

Personally I think Kavanagh will play a roll in the end of this qualification campaign, if his form doesn't desert him when he is fit again - he was really good for S'Land. Another I think is Andy O'Brien - he isn't that old and with a new club he can be as solid as Dunne (I think he and Cunningham were statistically the best central defensive partnership we had in terms of goals conceded)

Apart from the players you've mentioned:

McPhail could have one if Cardiff go up, don't see Stan picking a guy this old unless he was playing in the top flight though.

Doherty won Norwich's player of the year last year as a regular centre-half, and is still young enough to return either this campaign or next. Again I don't see him returning to the squad unless Norwich get promoted, perhaps next campaign.

Connolly cannot be ignored if he keeps up this pace, and certainly if he enjoys success with Sunderland next season. I don't think he can play with Keane, or that he would work well in a 4-5-1, but if he scores some goals in the top flight next season (if Sunderland are promoted), then I can't see him being left out of the squad.

McPhail is not good enough. He is barely good enough for Cardiff at the moment.

McPhail was excellent for Cardiff for the first half of the season. However with their slump his form also slumped. Cardiff fans began to refer to him as 'McFail'.

I suppose it's snappier than McFailure, which I've seen him called in the past, though McFrail was probably the most telling of his name-based nicknames.

Kav is better than Carsley, he played every game for Wigan last season and look how they are doing without him (it's not David Connolly they are missing) There is no argument for O'Brien being a crap player, just because he had a bad game in Cyprus doesn't counter the fact he did so well for us in the '06 qualifiers - it wasn't the backs that stopped us from qualifying.

i disagree completely. they both play in postitions where we're experiencing a dearth of options, either young or old. i wouldnt complain if 'the silver fox' started in front of carsley.

although i've stood up for connolly recently i think his days should be over, particularly if we continue with the lone striker tactic. the same applies to morrison, we'll do just fine without both

Carsley may not be the greatest, but he is 10 times better than Kavanagh. One full season in the top flight in 12 years is a hint at his quality. He was not good enough when he played for us & he won't be in the future either. He is woeful. Keane made him look OK of course.

If Stan selects Kavanagh then we can all give up.

Andy O'Brien seconded, he's still only 27 and has bags of experience. Hasn't been great the last couple of seasons but he'll be back.

He didn't walk out, Kerr said he wasn't part of his starting central midfield pairing, and he was out of the Everton side at the time. On top of that his child was born with Down's Syndrome, so he had to take time to take care of her. When he was established in the Everton side, he let the FAI know he wanted to be made available for squad selection again.

Alan Lee

Doing a good job for Ipswich and is the highest scoring Irish striker in the premiership. I would like to see him come into the squad at least and then use him as an option up front as a targetman if things are not going to plan. A squad player.

But this thread is fairly pointless because Staunton will be unbending in his selection of players. Connolly, Lee and Morrisson are banished while he is in charge.

Matt Holland, we dont have that many preimership regular midfifelders? I know he's a bit of a t*t but...

I see Gary Breen scored yesterday (an own goal) as part of a defence that conceded 6 so he'd fit right in!

Agree Kavanagh should be in the squad. What do we do in Autumn if Carsley is injured?
