how about calling up a player who'll actually be around for the next viable qualification campaign?

roy o'donovan was the best player on the pitch for the ireland b squad and its just the usual old prejudice that has him outside the senior squad. he'll move to england this summer and suddenly be international calibre after training with spurs for 2 weeks.

He's English, not Irish so he should'nt play for Ireland. And he plays plays in the third tier in England which is of a lower standard to the Eircom League.

In fairness, a lot of international football is at a completely rubbish level, e.g. yesterday. I presume if he hasn't been called up at this stage, then he won't be but I really don't know why not. I've never seen more than highlight reels but its obvious he is skillful.

I don't know about that. I think he turned down a call by Northern Ireland because he wants to play for us.

I think the point was that he would have played for England ahead of us if had got the chance.

In fairness to Joyce, that was the only way he could become a professional and play at the highest level of the game. He would have continued to play for Ireland if he had a realistic choice.

No. your wrong. He's been playing for Middlesex as a pro for 3 years, he didn't play for England because he wanted to be a pro, he played for England because there good enought to be at test cricket standard. Its almost identical to an irish soccer player playing for england as they stand a better chance of qualifying for a major tournament.

you also get paid for playing for england cricket.

He's as Irish as the Queen (German). He's also sh*t. Lee Trundle ffs. Leon Best was scoring more regularly in League 1 and he's only 20. I'd have him in the squad long before Lee Trundle.

    Get a clue.

Since when? I thought he had decided to throw his lot in with us after going over to the dark side briefly a few years ago?

I haven't seen his name in an underage squad in a couple of years now.

He's been playing a lot of first team football at Southampton and on loan at Yeovil, whether or not that's better than playing underage football for Ireland is up for discussion.
In Football Manager 2007, he's down as Irish, and until I see him in an England squad he'll stay that way for me

Apologies, I underestimated your knowledge on the issue. I know Joyce was a pro for 3 years with Middlesex. The point I was trying to make was that it wouldnt be unsustainable to continue playing for Ireland as a professional player. Eoin Morgan and Niall O'Brien will go the same way aswell.

Didn't he declare for England a few years ago? He was in their U20 squad but pulled out through injury:

If he still wanted to play for us he'd surely be in one of the squads.

He was in this squad for the Under-19's later the same year:
    http://www.rte.ie/sport/2005/0418/under19.html
Can't find any reviews with a lineup though

He was in this squad for the U-21's from February 2006: http://www.rte.ie/pda/sport/2006/0220/1081353.html

Although he didn't end up playing: http://www.ireland-mad.co.uk/news/lo...ED92&id=270123

Can't find any stories about him pulling out though

Incidentally, from that U-19 squad Darren O'Dea, Joseph O'Brien, Darron Gibson, Paul McShane and Andrew Keogh have all gone on to senior squad call ups.
