I have a Maxtor I bought in PC Pro a good three or four years ago and I've found it solid as dammit. The Retrospect backup software on it is rubbish but it's a great drive. You wouldn't believe how much porn you can get on one of these things.
Anyone know of a good make? what should i be looking for in the specs? Are there any that are compatible with USB 1 and 2?

Was in your position for the last week or so I trawled around the web and checked out a lot of reviews. Came to a final decision and ordered a Sandisk Titanium Cruzer 2GB last night. It comes with U3 so that total applications can be stored on it if this is a requirement otherwise it can be deleted.
Sandisk Titanium Cruzer
Ordered it from http://www.mymemory.co.uk at the great price of €32.87 incl. delivery.
I'm expecting delivery early next week so I can review it if you havn't decided by then.
Another vote for the Sandisk Cruzer U3 - a great bit of kit.
For a larger external option, what about a Maxtor Shared Storage II - USB and Ethernet etc etc

I've never used Sansdisk kit, but it comes highly recommended.
Lads, i should have said. Its something around 250 gig that i am after. External storage device.

250Gig?!
You sure you don't mean 250MB? I think the usual specs for memory sticks anyway is 256MB, 512MB and 1GB. Most computers don't have a 250GB hard drive.
He means external hard drive! I got an Iomega 320GB HDD for about €130 last week.

Ah...
Jayz, what do you need 320 Gig for?!
So as not to have to worry about filling up my laptop again I store a lot of full size photos and stuff, and sure for €130.....

Porn. Don't SansDisk do external HDDs then?
Had one of these at work and hadn't been using much but just failed to turn on one day. Got the case replaced as drive still ok i think. Got a My Book now which looks really nice.

Just a shop in town, Cantec. They have a site, www.cantecne.ie, but it's not great for shopping. I'm sure you could get it in any computer shop.
I haven't looked at partitioning it, but I'm sure you could.

All these drives are fairly cheap these days. Price increases if you want small tidy devices. Without power supply is the best but i think only available you to maybe 150GB.
