Barry Town -a lesson for us?

    Taken from the BBC website:

Barry Town chairman John Fashanu says an experienced Nigeria international will join the Welsh Premier champions next week.
The former Wimbledon striker also revealed that negotiations were already under way to screen Barry's games on African television.

Fashanu was unveiled as the club's new chairman last week and said he wants use the club to showcase Nigerian football talent.

    Fashanu's plans for Barry
The first of these "experienced players" will arrive in early January, according to Fashanu.

He refused to name the player, but said he had been a member of the Nigeria squad at the 1998 World Cup.

"He's a very popular player in Nigeria," Fashanu told BBC Wales Sport.

I'm in a position to make sure Barry Town are given the right exposure

"By looking at his CV, you'd see that he has been playing at a higher level than what we've seen at Barry Town.

"I've told him to come here because he wants to learn."

The next phase of Fashanu's revolution is to secure television rights for Barry Town games.

He believes the influx of Nigerian players at the club will generate massive interest with football fans in Africa.

Fashanu intends to show the games on the TV Africa network.

"It's quite fortunate because I'm the vice-president of that television network," said Fashanu, who is soon to be named chairman of the Nigeria Premier League.

"It's now being shown in 44 different African countries, so I'm in a position to make sure Barry Town are given the right exposure.

"It'll be very useful for recruiting African players and excellent for rising finance."

Fashanu's mission at Barry is to ensure "financial stability".

Experienced and young talented players will be brought to the club in the hope of selling them to English clubs a few months later for a hefty profit.

"I will only allow players to come in who are better than what we've already got," added Fashanu.

"I'm looking for exciting players who will improve the team - players that we can then sell on for $500,000 to $1m."

Sounds great to me ( anything to improve their league is a good idea -should we be doing something similar? I think our league has improved to the degree that we no longer have to think of such drastic measures but as I have said on previous threads a Welsh - Irish - Scottish ( Celtic ) Cup would be great -just look at what it has done for Rugby in this country.

Taribo West is the name being mentioned on Ceefax. And some Maltese crowd (one of the more obscure teams as well) are reported to be offering Paul Gascoigne £12500 a month (don't know if that's sterling or Maltese) to play in the Maltese league! No idea where that money is coming from, but it shows how backward the eL can be at times. Granted we've had David Kelly this year, but on population alone, we should be streets ahead of Malta and Wales!

When was that deal with the Sky heathens signed? Nice to see the money being put to good use!

Sounds like a contradiction to me.

So Fashanu is chairman of Barry Town, chairman of the Nigerian Premier League & Vice-President of that tv station.

Paying 12,500 to Gazza just sounds like the LOI mercenaries of the 70's. Boosts crowds for a few weeks but does nothing for the league of clubs.
